Area Introduction - Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas is the long square in the New Town dominated at the top end by the National Museum. Lined on both sides by shops and accommodation in three, four and five star range. It has a reputation for attracting "stag" parties on the main part of the square. Stag parties will be concentrated mainly in the road called "Ve Smeckach" which is also the highest concentration of strip clubs and sports bars (bear this in mind if you stay at the "K&K Fenix" or the "Andante" which are in this street). Two roads down is "Stepanska" which attracts stag parties to the Rocky O'Reilys bar (just along from the Radisson SAS). Outside the immediate Square you'll find several side streets with good accommodation options and without the beer crowds. To the lower end of Wenceslas Square it becomes the Old Town. At the top end of the square behind the National Museum it becomes Vinohrady. Both of these areas have separate pages for recommendations. In this section you will also find accommodation not only the Square itself but, within a 5-10 minute walk. Wenceslas Square is a 5 minute walk from the main train station (Hlavni Nadrazi). It is a 5 to 15 minute walk to the Old Town Square (depending on how far up the square you are staying). Allow a 35 minute walk to the Castle.

5*. The five star Hotel Radisson SAS is one minute walk from Wenceslas Square. Over 200 rooms but, often full. Radisson facilities make it a "frequent flyer" target but, not as much as the Marriott or Intercontinental etc. You'll love the restaurant and the Alcron bar has nightly live piano or jazz. Two or three nice restaurants in the street. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.radissonsas.com.
5*. Hotel Golden Gate is the sister hotel of the more centrally located Iron Gate. Opened in 2005. Front rooms face a main road so light sleepers should reserve a rear facing room. Five star facilities but the area (next door is a strip club) is not the best. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.goldengate.cz.
5*. Hotel Esplanade is one of the original Five star hotels. Little bit dated now. Front facing rooms overlook the main highway although you have views of the State Opera on the other side. Old style room layouts allowing more space. 1 minute walk from the top of Wenceslas Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.esplanade.cz.
5*. The Palace Hotel is a 3 minute walk from Wenceslas Square. One side of the hotel faces Jindrisska which is a cobblestoned road with a tramline which makes it a little noisy at times. It's one of the oldest five star hotels in Prague and this is shown by very nice public areas but, smallish rooms. Has a doorman. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.palacehotel.cz.
5*. Hotel Carlo IV has all the obvious five star hotel trappings, red carpet, guy that opens the door, bellboys etc but then you arrive at the room and think "small". Not spacious enough compared with other Prague options. Ten minute walk to Wenceslas Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.boscolohotels.com.
4*. Hotel Jalta is at the top end of Wenceslas Square. Needs a refit now. Some directories list it as 5 star, others as a four star and you can understand the confusion as it rates itself as "4 star deluxe". Friendly professional staff. Often a "last minute" hotel with 90 rooms. Excellent restaurant called "Hot". Internal conference centre (250). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteljalta.cz.
4*. The four star Hotel Yasmin is a 3 minute walk from Wenceslas Square set two streets parallel to the square. Opened in 2006 as the latest of the "design" hotels. Very modern style compared with most Hotels in Prague . Six floors with nearly 200 rooms. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotel-yasmin.cz.

4*. The four star Hotel Manes is opposite the Caesar Palace hotel about 100 metres from the riverfront. Ten minute walk to Wenceslas Square. Opened in 2006. Part of the "Euroagentur" group, it has 50 quite spacious rooms. Ground floor restaurant seems popular. You can walk to the Charles Bridge along the riverfront in about 15-20 minutes. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.euroagentur.com.
4*. The four star Hotel Maria Prag is opposite the Main railway station on the other side of the small park and has 109 rooms. Three minute walk to Wenceslas Square. Fifteen to twenty minutes walk to the Old Town Square. Suffers from a common issue here, namely "great place, crap staff". Sometimes it's a one-off but, some places have this complaint constantly. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.falkensteiner.com.
4*. The four star Hotel Prague Inn is located right at the bottom of Wenceslas Square. Front rooms have a full view of the square. Very busy pedestrianised area day and night as it funnels pedestrian traffic between Wenceslas Square and the Old Town Square. Hotel has 34 rooms of mostly doubles. Aircon in all rooms. They have the fashionably slick grey/red colour scheme. Some double rooms are interconnectible which is a good option for families. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelpragueinn.cz".
4*. The four star Floor Hotel is on Na Prikope in a pedestrianised area approximately a 1 minute walk from the bottom of Wenceslas Square. Formerly the Prague Planet Hollywood, then a Casino, then the Joe Hotel and now the Floor Hotel (all in 8 years). Seems to be an issue with room preparation at peak times. Rooms are spacious but has early check-out and late check-in times. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.floorhotel.cz.
4*. The four star Caesar Palace opened in 2006. The location is quite good with many small bars and restaurants around. It's a 10 minute walk to Wenceslas Square and another 5 to the Old Town Square. The hotel itself has 82 rooms. Minor issues like skimping (you pay if you use the in-room tea or coffee and the sauna is an extra charge). Light sleepers should try and get a rear facing room as the front overlooks a cobblestoned road with tramline. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelcaesar.cz.
4*. The four star Hotel Adria is located on the lower half of Wenceslas Square. Very smart and efficient staff (including security). Different room standards. Front rooms face Wenceslas Square but, it's not noisy. Upper floors at the rear overlook the Franciscan Garden. Excellent basement restaurant specialising in fish (Triton). Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.adria.cz.
4*. The four star Hotel Liberty is at the bottom of Wenceslas Square in a pedestrianised area. Twenty standard rooms are on lower floors. 9 executive rooms (spacious) are on the upper floor and the 3 suites (with rooftop and Prague Castle view) are at the top. Aircon in all rooms. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelliberty.cz.
4*. What used to be the old Pension Unitas and the Art Prison Hostel has been renovated into a four star hotel. They've done their best to get round as many renovation problems as possible and it is smart but we'll have to wait for reviews. I hope they can keep all that white decoration clean. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.unitas.cz.
4*. Accome Julis is a luxury Apartment Hotel towards the top of Wenceslas Square. 72 very modern and fully equipped apts with kitchenettes. Apts are either "small studio", "large studio" or "one bedroom". Light sleepers should get rear (garden) facing rooms as this end of the square is noisy at the front. Free internet in reception. Free use of sauna/pool at the basement "world Class Gym" with pass supplied by the hotel (pool is 20 metres). Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.accome.cz. (click on the "our hotels" link).
3*. Heavy sleepers will like the Hotel Da Vinci. Sandwiched between the main Police station and the main Prague highway. Perfectly nice rooms, great staff but very noisy location. Strictly to be used as a base from which to explore the city. Don't expect to be lounging in reception. One of a pair of hotels (the Rafaello is in the next street). It's a seven minute walk to the top of Wenceslas Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteldavinci.cz.
3*. Pension Museum is a B&B upgraded to three star. One of my personal recommendations as several friends have stayed here over the years. Twelve spacious garden facing rooms, all at the back i.e. not visible from the main road or Wenceslas Square. One minute walk to the top of Wenceslas Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.pension-museum.cz.
3*. Hotel Musketyr was a pension that received an almost total refurbishment to be upgraded to the three star class. Located 2 doors up from the Pension Museum. I've not visited since the reconstruction. They have two classes of room (1st Class or Standard). Room 102 is popular. It's called the "Wedding Room" and has a glass partition between the bathroom and the bedroom (separate wc). I think the "standard" rooms are over-priced. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelmusketyr.cz.
3*. The three star Pension U Suteru has an excellent location just 100m from Vaclavske Namesti in a reasonably quiet street (for the centre of Prague). Four floors incorporate singles, doubles and two apartments. I recommend for the apartments and the relatively cheap singles but, beware, there is no lift in this building. Part of the small "accomprague" group. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.usuteru.cz.
3*. Hotel Expres. Note that this is NOT the Holiday Inn. Located in Skorepka about midway between Wenceslas and the Old Town Square. Basic three star. Good deals if you are prepared to book room-only and share a bathroom. Area is "fruity" i.e. couple of sex shops but, nothing hard. Early check-out (11am). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotel-expres.com.
3*. The three star Hotel Tchaikovsky has been open about 4 years now just down from the IP Pavlova metro. Nice little place, very stylish. Don't let the street it's in put you off. Seems a little off the track but in reality has quite a good location for the price. Fifteen minute walk to Wenceslas Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteltchaikovsky.com.
3*. The three star Hotel Jerome House is very close to the National Theatre. Rooms are basic but clean. Larger rooms suitable for extra bed for child but will be a squeeze for an adult. Pros - location and upgraded public areas, triple room for price of double. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.jerome.cz (Note: Jerome now operates their own travel service so you'll see a choice of hotels).
3*. Aparthotel Lublanka is a good option for people who don't mind a regular Czech street but want to be a 5 minute walk from Wenceslas Square. Has a decent public bar on the premesis. Lists itself as 3 and a half stars (on the Czech scale) but, the last refit meets at least the 3 star standard.
3*. Hotel Beranek is located in Tylovo Namesti close to the IP Pavlova metro and about a 5 minute walk away from the top of Wenceslas Square. Typical modern Czech 3 star. Good value and good Prague location. You can contact them direct using SKYPE (hotelberanek). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelberanek.cz.

3*. Hotel Elysee lists itself as 3 and a half star. Hotel has the top four floors of a commercial building on Wenceslas Square. The hotel is accessed by walking into the old shopping passage and the reception is on the first floor. On my last visit, twice I rang the reception buzzer and nobody answered. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelelysee.cz.
3*. Holiday Inn by Express is opposite the entry of the main railway station (Hlavni Nadrazi). Basic 3 star in the HI Express group. A bit like Novotel was 10 years ago. Often has "last minute" deals and popular with groups. Three minute walk to Wenceslas Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hiexpress.com.
3*. The three star Hotel Alton is located approx 30 seconds from the IP Pavlova metro station and a 5 minute walk from the top of Wenceslas Square. Front facing rooms overlook the busiest road in Prague but the windows are sound proofed very well (all rooms are airconditioned). Nice staff. Nice and clean. Disabled rooms have more space. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelalton.cz.
3*. Hotel Andante is a good budget choice. The hotel is very nice. It has rooms and apartments and is only a 3 minute walk from Wenceslas Square. Only thing that lets it down is the street. If you like quiet then this is not for you. Three strip clubs and three sport bars attract the stag party groups. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.andante.cz.
3*. Hotel and Residence Praga1 is a 5 minute quick walk from Wenceslas Square. Front rooms face a busy road. Clean and smart. Often has "last minute" deals. Little bit let down by the road location and the strip bar opposite but, hotel itself is fine. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.praga1.cz.
3*. Hotel Tyl is located 60 seconds from the IP Pavlova metro station and 5 minutes from the top of Wenceslas Square. Very nice three star, friendly staff. Internet booking discount. Front of the hotel overlooks Tylovo Namesti (a pleasant square). Several reasonable restaurants and bars nearby. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteltyl.com.
3*. Pension B35 is now called Residence Belehradska 35 and is a bit more than 5 minutes walk to Wenceslas Square (15 mins) but, it's only three tram stops and it's such a good place I've included it here. It has 16 apartments of 4 different combinations. Pros - Family run, fairly cheap. Nice apartments. Cons - Public transport or taxis after dark. Note that breakfast is not included. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.b35.cz.
2*. The Church Pension is located in Jungmannova above the Divadlo Kalich, very central location with excellent views from the 5th floor. Basic amenities (some en-suite). A Christian church pension. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.churchpension.cz.
2*. Hostel Miss Sophies is the first of a pair of modern hostels (the other is the "Czech Inn" in the Vinohrady area) and I personally recommend both. Excellent facilities, lots of options for dorms (up to 5 sharing), en-suite rooms (single/double/twin) or even private apartments. Free internet, breakfast (with kitchen) included. Friendly staff. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.miss-sophies.com.
2*. Hostel Papillon is a 4 minute walk from Wenceslas Square. Well that was the high point. It's downhill from there. Even for a hostel, it has a reputation for not being the cleanest place in Prague and that's being kind. I don't recommend this hostel. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.papillon-hostel.cz.
2*. Hostel Golden Sickle is a dorm hostel three minutes walk from Wenceslas Square i.e. no rooms. Price includes breakfast but, apparently it does not have many lockers (first come first served for keys) so security of valuables can be a problem. I don't recommend this hostel. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.goldensickle.com.
2*. Hostel Junior is a 10 minute walk from Wenceslas Square or 15-20 minutes from the Old Town Square. Now part of the Euroagentur group. Lots of room combinations for 4 people up to 8 people sharing a room. Good services like internal restaurant, laundry etc. Includes breakfast. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.hostel-junior.info.
2*. B&B Inna Kosova is not a spelling mistake (Inna Kosova is the landlady's name). Classic Czech B&B but what a location, right next to the National Museum. Decor is a bit purple but, what the hell. Prices from 18U$ per person and the apartments can sleep four. As a guide, you will find the homepage at www.sweb.cz/kosovainna/us1.html.
