Area Introduction - Ujezd and Andel

Ujezd is approximately 300 metres from the Prague area officially known as Mala Strana which starts at the Hunger Wall (Funicular). Public transport is limited to trams although it's only a 5 minute walk to Malostranske Namesti. Ujezd tram stop is opposite the Funicular. In the immediate area are my favourite Mexican restaurant (Cantina) and my favourite cafe (Cafe Savoy). Next to the Savoy is the Olympia bar/restaurant in the Kolkovna group. Also in the area you'll find a reasonable selection of small bars (look for La Bastille), restaurants and small shops. Ask your hotel for directions to the riverfront restaurant called "Rezava Kotva" (Rusty Anchor - Great food and view over the weir towards the Dancing House).

Andel is a more cosmopolitan area with excellent public transport connections for bus, tram and metro. Andel (also called Novy Smichov) has a large shopping centre, two cinemas and a good selection of bars and restaurants. Andel has the bigger hotels like Andels Design and the Movenpick along with some smaller 3 star options located on the main road.

Both Andel and Ujezd are technically in the Prague 5 area but only three tram stops to Mala Strana or six stops to the Old Town. Andel has a metro station and is also the location of a large bus terminus also known as "Na Knizeci". There are no hostels in the area.

My list for the Ujezd and Andel area

All Prague hotel accommodation descriptions are based on my own independent assessments. On this page you'll find the webpage of the accommodation concerned and there are also links to Trip Advisor where you can read the description supplied by the accommodation itself plus photos and comments by guests who have already stayed there. There are also options for making bookings if you decide to make a reservation.

5*. Ujezd. Hotel Riverside is one of the newer 5 stars. It's on a busy road junction but, once inside you'd never notice. You'll find yourself walking a lot or else taking taxis as it's not convenient for either metro or tram. Front facing rooms have New/Old Town river view. Square facing rooms have river view. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.riversideprague.com.

4*. Ujezd. Hotel Roma is opposite the Ujezd tram stop which is great for travel but, not so great if it's outside your window. No complaints about the rear facing rooms. Ten minute walk to Malostranska. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelroma.cz.

4*. Andel. Andels Design Hotel is in the centre of the "new" Smichov area. Very modern. Very chic. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.andelshotel.com.

4*. Andel. Andels Design Suites is the same place as above with the exception that you are on a "suite" floor as opposed to a "room" floor (and an excuse for another webpage). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.andelshotel.com.

4*. Hotel Movenpick is just outside the "Novy Smichov" area but it's only a 5 minute walk. The local area is quite run down and there is a new highway right outside. Common in the "last minute" offers. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.moevenpick-hotels.com.

3*. Ujezd. Hotel Julian is on the Ujezd/Andel border but, not on the main road. It always gets good ratings for friendliness and general "staff help". Not the greatest location but, 5 mins walk will get you to the tram system. During the day you could walk through Kampa Park to the Charles Bridge in 15 minutes but, at night you'll be using the roads so allow an extra 5-10 minutes. Quiet area. It has disabled access rooms. A real 3 and a half star. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.julian.cz.

3*. Andel. Hotel Ibis Smichov is one of the newer hotels in Prague and is behind the main Andel area but, only 1 or 2 minutes walk. Standard Ibis accommodation, this is often recommended for people driving here. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelibis.cz.

3*. Andel. Hotel Atos is right on the main road opposite the shopping complex (it's now mostly pedestrianised but, it still has the tramline). Known as a clean budget hotel. Front facing rooms can be a little noisy if you like the window open. Children up to 6 are free if sharing with parents. See Arbes Mepro below. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelatos.cz.

3*. Ujezd. Hotel Arbes-Mepro is the sister hotel of the Atos above but, although only about 300 metres away it is firmly in the Ujezd area. People are often moved between the two depending on booking conditions i.e. if you get bumped. Abes Mepro is in a much quieter location but still only a few minutes walk away from the Atos. Ideal location if you are prepared to use public transport. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.arbes-mepro.cz.

3*. Ujezd. Botel Admiral is on the Andel/Ujezd border on the river just in front of the Riverside Hotel. It is the biggest and most comfortable (following the 2003 refit) of the four Prague Botels. Twins and doubles. Worth a trip just to eat in the restaurant. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.admiral-botel.cz.
