Old Town Accommodation

The Old Town Square is officially the "tourist centre" of Prague. By geographical area it is also the smallest. The area is less than 1000 square metres but, it packs in some of the best options for food, drink, culture and all types of Prague accommodation. Situated between the majority of the New Town and the Jewish Quarter, it is never more than 10 minutes to anywhere else in the Old Town.
How best to put it. More bars, more restaurants, more hotels, more clubs, more people all in a fairly small and widely pedestrianised area. You could stay at a different place every week and eat in a different restaurant every night for a year and never go outside this area. Original buildings dating back to the 14th Century and older are a 5 minute walk away from the Old Town Square. The castle you will go to once or twice. The Old Town Square you'll come back to again and again.
My list of Prague accommodation for this area.
All Prague accommodation descriptions are based on my own independent assessments. On this page you'll find the webpage of the Prague accommodation concerned and there are also links to Trip Advisor where you can read the description supplied by the Prague accommodation itself plus photos and comments by guests who have already stayed there. There are also options for making bookings if you decide to make a reservation.
5*. Four Seasons. It has "Allegro" which was the best restaurant in 2006 and is the only restaurant in the country with a Michelin star. Great history. Spent three years building this five star hotel, opened in 2002, got flooded, closed and opened again 6 months later. River facing rooms are great. Side and front facing have no view and can get noisy. It has a 24 hour gym (attended 0600-2200) with complimentary fruit and drinks etc. Separate saunas for men and women are also complimentary for guests. It's the Four Seasons. Top class. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.fourseasons.com/prague.
Something special: iPod docking station, Safe large enough for 15.6" laptop, umbrella.
5*. Grand Hotel Bohemia. This is one of the older five star hotels in Prague which in the current market means it could be considered a deluxe four star based on the level of service. Older means that generally you have larger rooms than normal. Quiet location but still only a five minute walk along Celetna to get to the Old Town Square. Never heard any complaints from here which is rare. Dances and other events will often be held in the Boccaccio Ballroom. It is part of the Austria Hotels group. Aircon is standard in all rooms. Fast Internet in Executive or above. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.grandhotelbohemia.cz.
Something special: The Boccaccio Ballroom.
5*. Hotel Pariz. The hotel is often associated with the words "charming, "fabulous" and "classical". One of the original 5 star hotels in Prague. Bordered on two sides by minor roads so it's active but, quiet. It's a "must see" for people interested in Art Nouveau (especially the Sarah Bernhardt restaurant). Professional staff. Communal areas are spacious and luxurious. Rooms are reasonably spacious for a five star hotel in Prague. Part of the Concorde group. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotel-pariz.cz.
Something special: Opened in 1904.
5*. Hotel Buddha Bar. Something different this way comes. I hope Ray Bradbury would excuse me twisting his title a little but, 2009 saw the arrival of the latest "lifestyle" hotel in Jakubska of all places (behind the Tyn church and 90 seconds walk to the Old Town Square). Be prepared for dark red and incense in your face. It appears to have the five star service, looks great in the pictures and as with all "lifestyle" hotels it comes complete with it's own pampering and "eatertainment" (yes I have spelt it correctly) centres. I wish it well. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.buddha-bar-hotel.cz.
Something special: laptop safe, best selection of music in the city, bathroom mirror with built-in TV.
5*. Hotel U Prince. One of the original five star hotels. Rooms are classically decorated (visible wood beams and frescos in some). Front facing rooms have a view of the Old Town Square itself. Very scenic public cafe/restaurant on the roof. Ground floor restaurant is generally taken over by tourists in the evening (live music nightly). Some issues with staff attitude but, nothing that should spoil the trip. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hoteluprince.com.
Something special: Rooftop terrace.
5*. Hotel Intercontinental. The group now includes Holiday Inn. This is the "frequent flyer king" in Prague so staff professionalism is standard. Lots of business traffic booking double rooms and using points for upgrades to suites etc. Purpose built hotel so all rooms are square etc not like the older five star hotel options like U Prince at Pariz as listed earlier. River facing rooms have castle view as well. The rooftop restaurant is very pleasant in the evening. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so the hotel homepage is at www.icprague.com.
5*. Hotel President. The hotel got a refit in 2003/4 following flood damage which kept it's five star hotel rating but, made it far more recommendable. It's next to the Intercontinental but, doesn't have the same aura. Perfectly good business hotel with a special business floor. Front facing rooms have river/castle view. Rear facing rooms above the 3rd floor have Old Town rooftop view. Also has a Casino. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelpresident.cz.
5*. Hotel Ventana. Opened in 2005. It's a "flat iron" hotel (the thin end has a view of the Old Town Square). It is built above commercial premesis (Swarovski) and takes the upper floors. Rooms range from double up to Deluxe suite. Rooms facing "Stupartska" face the rear of the Tyn Church. Rooms facing "Celetna" have the busy pedestrian street view. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.ventana-hotel.net.
5*. Hotel Iron Gate. Iron Gate has 44 rooms and suites. It's one road back from the Old Town Square but it's a quiet road. Top floor front facing rooms have a view of the Old Town Hall. The street is very Bohemian with small cafes, art galleries, jazz club, restaurants and tea rooms etc. One of my favourite areas. Recommended especially if you can afford the Tower Royal Suite. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.irongate.cz.
5*. Old Town Square Hotel and Residence. The hotel directly overlooks the main part of Old Town Square. Front facing rooms have the view of the whole Square (Town Hall, St Nicholas Church, Tyn Church). Rooms facing "Zelezna" have a restricted view of the Town Hall. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.otsh.com.
Something special: front facing rooms overlook the square.
5*. Grand Hotel Praha. Also known as the Apostolistic Residence, it is right opposite the Old Town Square town hall and Orloj as you'll see from their webcam. Very luxurious and tasteful decor which seems to fit nicely with the architecture. Room 213 is the most sought after. Several room types and anything facing the front will have the view (and be more expensive of course). They have a strange deal called "Run of House" where you don't reserve a room but instead have a choice of what is left on your day of arrival. This can get you a good deal or it could be the most expensive option depending on room availability. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.grandhotelpraha.cz.
Something special: Room 213.
5* Pachtuv Palace. Part of the Mamaison group. Located 2 minutes walk from the Charles Bridge. Fifty rooms and four different types of suites stylishly furnished and including kitchen/kitchenette. Couples should consider one of the two bedroom (two bathroom) suites. The whole hotel is a famous Prague landmark and it's the only place I know offerring a "butler" service. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.pactuvpalace.com.
Something special: Butler service.
4*. Hotel Cerna Liska. Also known as the Hotel Lippert. Excellent location with front facing rooms having a view of the Old Town Square (Jan Hus monument and Tyn Church). Last refit brought it into the 4* range but only just and it can't be considered luxurious in any way. At least they make it clear that what they call a "double" is a marriage bed i.e. one frame but two single matrasses inside. They have a one bedroom apartment in the attic. Both restaurants and the terrace are open to the public. Very late check-in i.e. 3pm. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.cernaliska.cz.
4*. Hotel U Zlateho Jelena. Also called Hotel Golden Stag, it is located in a fairly quiet street about 1 minute walk from the Old Town Square. 14th Century building modernised but left structurally almost the same so this means you'll get bigger rooms. I recommend getting a room which overlooks the rear courtyard if possible. Rooms offering Jacuzzi have the adapted baths. Very elegant place with rack-rate starting at 100 Euros for a standard double which I think is good value. Use the hotel's airport pickup service. Personally recommended. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotel-u-zlateho-jelena.cz.
Something special: the inner courtyard.
4*. Hotel Barcelo Old Town. Located in Celetna about 3 minutes walk from the Old Town Square. People using Cedaz should take the Namesti Republiky drop-off and walk the last 200 metres to the hotel. I walked in here about a week after it opened and asked three people on reception what the "deluxe" rating meant. Nobody could really explain it hence why I don't list it as such. It is one of the newest hotels in the area and they went for a very modern decor. Mediterranean "fusion" restaurant which means practically anything can be served. Lots of options for fairly spacious suites if you can afford it. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their group homepage is at www.barcelo.com.
4*. Hotel Savic. Renovated and opened in 2006. 27 airconditioned and non-smoking rooms. The public Dominikana restaurant is on-site (take care of your bag if you eat outside) and they open their courtyard to guests in the Summer. Room spec is pretty good and even better if you want to pay a bit extra. Reasonable value considering it's excellent location. Try and get a room facing Karlova Ulice. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.savic.eu.
4*. Hotel Zlaty Strom. Also known as Hotel Golden Tree but it is not the Golden Tree in Novy Svet). Located on Karlova about 50 metres from Charles Bridge. Twins, doubles and suites elegantly decorated and furnished. Public restaurant on site. WARNING: There is a basement music club so light sleepers should consider rooms only on the upper floors. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.zlatystrom.cz.
4*. Residence Agnes. Part of the CPH (Central Prague Hotels) group and lists itself as "boutique". I believe in this case it means staying in rooms totally bereft of any style. I think it's overpriced but families with a child could equal this out with the child discount. The rooms are generally larger than it's competitors and all rooms are airconditioned. It's located on the pleasant Hastalska Square in the Josefov quarter. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.residenceagnes.cz.
4* Perla Hotel. Opened in 2008 close to Uhelny Trh. Rooms with a very modern style and dark wood floors. The basic room is called "Comfort" which is a standard double or twin. Two of this type of rooms can be interconnected to make a family room or small suite. Pizzeria is on-site. Worth getting an internal facing room as the road outside can get noisy. The "Wellness" area is a reasonable gym and a Sauna (sauna is extra). Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.perlahotel.cz.
4*. Hotel U Cervene Boty. Also known as Hotel Red Shoe. Four suites (no kitchen) with classic decoration. Located above a souvenir shop at Karlova 5. Any of the front facing apartments are great for people watchers. Can't honestly see what the fourth star is for. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelcenter.cz.
4*. Hotel Leonardo. Located in Karoliny Svetle which is a pleasant 5 minute walk to either the Charles Bridge via the river road or the Old Town Square. Five star prices but it's got a lot of facilities. Suites on the top floor have a river view. Extra sofa-beds, kitchenettes and adjoining rooms provide family options. Very nice atrium so even rooms overlooking the courtyard have a pleasant view. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelleonardo.cz.
4*. Ungelt. Note that part of the building is known as Royal Residence Ungelt and contains a further 6 smaller apartments. This is a four star suite hotel. One side of the hotel overlooks the historic Tyn Courtyard but, the entry is in the side street called "Stupartska". Ten fully equipped apartments with separate kitchen. Three of the apartments have a view of the rear of the Tyn church. In my opinion the courtyard facing apts (back) are the best. The Gothic apartment has three bedrooms. One minute walk to the Old Town Square. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.ungelt.cz.
4*. Hotel Maximilian. This was once an independent "classic style" hotel but it was renovated into a much more "contemporary" style of Prague accommodation i.e. more glass, less wood (breakfast room reminds me of a previous office canteen). Has a branch of Sabai (Thai massage) in the basement. Quiet location but only a five minute walk to the Old Town Square. Consistently in Pragues' top 20 hotels even with the increased competition. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.maximilianhotel.com.
Something special: on-site Sabai Thai massage centre.
4*. Hotel Astoria. This is one of the old four star class which is suffering from the new high standard being set for this class in Prague. Perfectly nice hotel but not considered stylish at all. Quiet street and two minutes walk to the Old Town Square. Fifth and sixth floor front facing rooms have rooftop views. Manual aircon. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelastoria.cz.
4*. Bellagio Hotel. If you are searching for the Bellagio, you'll find you are redirected to the Hotel Clement which you can read about on the Namesti Republiky accommodation page. Or if you wanted the same location then look at the Caruso below.
4*. Hotel Caruso. This took over the former Hotel Bellagio in 2009 and was renamed originally as the Hotel Dinitz. Located in the Jewish quarter in a quiet street. The attic rooms are nice but the rest of the rooms are on the small side. It was a straight takeover with no apparent refurbishment to the rooms since the last one by the Bellagio in 2003. Five minute walk to the Old Town Square. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelcarusoprague.cz.
4*. Hotel Casa Marcello. This is what I consider as a "chic but, charming" hotel suited to couples who would go for a modern hotel in quiet historic surroundings. Also commonly listed as a "romantic" hotel. It has the nice "Agnes" restaurant (great in the outside courtyard in nice weather). Spacious suites. Look out for the "3 day package" which appears very popular. Three minute walk to the Jewish Quarter. Personally recommended. Part of the Concorde group. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.casa-marcello.cz.
Something special: Restaurant Agnes in the courtyard.
4*. Hotel Antik. Also called Hotel Antik Garni but this is not the "Hotel Antik City". A three minute walk to the Old Town Square. It's located in Dlouha (Long Road) and you'll have a 3 minute walk to the Old Town Square. Thirty rooms are all doubles and spacious enough to get in an extra single if required. The attic rooms have the most space followed by the courtyard facing corner rooms. Three floors but no lift. Breakfast room is great if you like art and breakfast in the courtyard during Summer months looks very nice. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelantik.cz. Now lists itself as a "boutique" hotel and curiously has it's webpage translated into Norweigan.
Something special: Covered internal courtyard.
4*. Hotel Cerny Slon. Also known as the Black Elephant, it has sixteen rooms, no suites but the attic room is perfect for 4 people. Corner rooms are the best and have a reasonable view towards Tynsky Dvur (rooms at the far end of the corridors do not have the view as side facing rooms at the far end of the corridor face opposite buildings and the side of the Tyn church). The alleyway to the Old Town Square is busy day and night. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelcernyslon.cz.
4*. Hotel Clementin. Prague accommodation that sells itself as the "smallest building" in Prague. Actually it can only claim "narrowest building used as a hotel" but, it's still got some class. Only has 9 rooms over three floors. Public areas are a bit cramped but, the extra space went into the rooms which is good. It's located between the Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge (2 minute walk either way) but, it's just off the beaten track making it a central but quiet location. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.clementin.cz.
4*. Hotel Josef. Opened to rave reviews for it's ultra modern style. Independent hotel. Put your sunglasses on before entering the reception. Superior class rooms have the "glass bathroom" which can be a little unnerving for some. Professional staff. Always getting good reviews. Lots of nice restaurants and bars on this side of the Old Town Square. Recommended. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hoteljosef.com.
4*. Hotel Metamorphis. This has lots of options from suites and apartments down to singles. Some rooms are inter-connectable. Tynsky Dvur (courtyard) facing rooms are the best. Breakfast is in the basement restaurant. Metamorphis also has a public restaurant on the ground floor and outside. The courtyard has a really nice fish restaurant called "Rybi Trh". Both hotel and restaurant are personally recommended. Old Town Square is literally 60 seconds walk. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelmetamorphis.cz.
4*. Metamorphis Excellent. This is the sister "residence" of the Hotel Metamorphis located in the building next door. As with the hotel I recommend the courtyard facing rooms. More modern decor and room spec in it's 18 rooms and apartments (1 bedroom and 2 bedroom). You use the services of the hotel including the Vabene restaurant which is private for breakfast and becomes public for lunch and dinner. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.metamorphis-excellent.cz.
4*. Hotel Modra Ruze. This is on the border of Old and New Towns. It used to be only the location of the Modra Ruze (famous cellar restaurant with duck specialities) but, the building was developed into a four star hotel in 2006. Very historic 13th Century building formerly used as a bakers and a brewery amongst other things. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelmodraruze.cz.
Something special: the restaurant.
4*. Hotel Rott. Rott is a 30 second walk from the Old Town Square. Located in "little square", the front facing rooms have all the views. It used to be a regular apartment house on top of commercial premesis. This was partitioned so, the size of the rooms are less than average for the four star hotel class unless you can get one of the "superior" class rooms. Non-front facing rooms overlook the internal courtyard. The hotel gets it's name from the Rott Steel company who owned the building before. Location is almost the best but, basic room size can let it down. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelrott.cz.
4*. Residence Retezova. Also known as Residence Three Golden Chains and is on my Prague accommodation recommended list for apartment hotels. It has 9 different apartments of varying sizes. The hotel supplies ground plans of the different types (which is helpful). Dead-end street which makes it quiet but, only 3 minute walk from the Old Town Square. Reception is 24 hours but, you still get a key to the front door. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.retezova.com.
4*. U Stare Pani. This hotel upgraded from 3 star in 2009. Seventeen rooms spread over three floors of this 15th Century house. They gave up two rooms to make the apartments on the top floor. Nice street, restaurants, cafe, art galleries, tea rooms etc. U Stare Pani (at the old lady's) is popular for it's basement Jazz club. Rooms are reasonably sized for the class. Front facing rooms have a quiet street view. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.ustarepani.cz.
4*. Hotel Royal Esprit. 16 doubles and 14 twins plus a couple of suites. Rooms on 4th and 5th floors have aircon and views. If you want to be sure of a nice view ask for a room facing Rybna. Great location with a three minute walk to the Old Town Square. Fairly quiet street with the Cajun restaurant "Red Hot and Blues" opposite. Public restaurant on site. Small conference room for 14 people. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their group homepage is at www.euroagentur.com.
4*. Hotel Red Chair. Upgraded from Pension Red Chair in 2009 and I can't tell the difference. It is a 3 minute walk from Charles Bridge. Located in Liliova at the "Bethlehem Square" end of the road. It has 15 rooms from small-single up to two rooms that can sleep four and the attic room could easily sleep six. 4 for 3 discounts off-season. Use the hotel taxi for airport transfers (good price) and the hotel offers other local discounts. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.redchair.cz.
4*. Hotel U Kocku. Located in Karlova (Royal Road) but this is a very quiet road. Low end of this class. The Mediterranean restaurant becomes public for lunch and dinner. Photos on the website show the triple rooms. Doubles are much smaller and many are at the rear of the building. Pretty good value for the location. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.ukocku.cz.
4*. Jewel. Formerly U Klenotnika. Refurbished and upgraded from 3 star in 2010. Located in Rytirska and next to Uhelny Trh it's less than a 5 minute walk to either the Old Town Sqaure or Wenceslas Square. Double rooms come in two sizes (A is bigger). No Lift (luggage lift only) so bear this in mind if climbing stairs is an issue. Nice airy breakfast area. Many small shops and bars in this street. Free parking available if reserved. I don't go much on the new colour scheme. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.design-hotel-prague.com.
4*. Hotel Hastal. Central location in the pleasant Hastalske Namesti in the Jewish Quarter. 31 rooms (many above average size for this class). Five minute walk to the Old Town Square. The wellness options use the Planet Zen location in the next door hotel Maximilian. The hotel supports UNICEF. So recently upgraded (2011) that many of the website pictures still show only three stars. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelhastalprague.com.
3*. Hotel Betlem Club. Located in the charming Betlemske Namesti (Bethlehem Square). There are 21 rooms with options from single bed in the attic to two-bed apartment type rooms. Much better decor after they got rid of the purple carpets and stainless steel fittings etc. It has an excellent location and is good value for money. Pickup service from the airport is a bit expensive but the return trip is OK. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.betlemclub.cz.
3*. Arcadia Old Town. Two buildings less than 100 metres away from the Old Town Square. Kozna 6 are all small one-bedroom apartments (no kitchen). Kozna 13 has the bigger apartments (large studio and 1-bedroom) with an option of extra sofabed. Kozna 13 apartments all have kitchenette. Both buildings have breakfast served in an adjacent cafe. Apartment 3 in Kozna 13 is recommended for 2+2 families. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.arcadiaoldtown.com.
3*. Hotel Central. An old 3* hotel that was struggling to keep it's rating. Underwent a refit (new bathrooms and fittings etc) in 2006 to spruce it up a bit and renamed itself as a "boutique" hotel. Higher floors facing the front have rooftop views. Excellent location with three minutes walk to the Old Town Square. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.central-prague.com.
3*. Pension U Lilie. Also known as Hotel u Lilie and I recommend it for the suites. Rooms 5 and 9 offer double bed accom with a living room for extra space. High season only 3300kc dropping to 2400 off season but you are really paying for the location. Other rooms available. Located at Liliova 15 in the heart of the Old town 200 metres from Charles Bridge or a 3 minute walk to the Old Town Square. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pensionulilie.cz.
3*. U Tri Bubnu. Also known as "at the Three Drums Hotel". Next door is the apartment residence. Thirty seconds from the Old Town Square. The hotel attic room is the biggest (Room 14). In the apartment hotel, suite 5 is the attic area (sleeps six) but, not suitable for young children as it's a split floor with no real protection against falling through the bannister. Fine for adults. No lifts in the buildings so it's up the windy stairs. If the "suitcase" guy is in reception then the going tip rate is 50kc. Use the airport pickup service. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.utribubnu.cz.
3*. Hotel Cloister Inn. The hotel is one of my personal favourites. Frightening when you first arrive and see the bars on the windows (the whole street used to consist of various police offices and cells) but, inside is a modern friendly three star. Many rooms were renovated in 2009 in an attempt to make 4 star (needs a higher room spec to make the step up). Five minutes walk to Charles Bridge or the Old Town Square. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.cloister-inn.cz.
3*. Residence Masna. Also known as the Masna Apartment House and is a set of 22 regular modern Czech style studio/1bed apartments in a side road about a 3 minute walk from the Old Town Square. The apartments face either the street or the courtyard. Top floor apartments have rooftop views depending on the side, you see either the castle (courtyard side) or the Old Town (street side). Friendly staff, lots of ammenities, laundry, internet etc. Personally recommended. For this type of Prague accommodation you will find the residence homepage at www.masna-apartment-house.cz.
3*. Pension Green Garland. This has six doubles and three triples (all en-suite) on the third floor of a 14th Century commercial building in the Old Town. Little bit expensive for what you get but, nice family run place. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.uzv.cz.
3*. U Cerne Hvezdy. Also known as Hotel Black Star. Sister hotel to the Clementin (actually it's next door). Historic building and very quiet street considering how central it is. Old Town Square is a three minute walk. Three suites with full kitchen (called deluxe). Two suites with fidge/toaster. Two doubles. Very stylish decor if you like metal frames and parket flooring. Way overpriced for three star but it's a nice place in a great location so ignore the stars and use their transport service. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.ucernehvezdy.cz.
3*. Hotel 7 Angels. Located in Jilska which is a 1 minute walk to the Old Town Square or 20 minutes to the Castle. I'm expecting this will be upgraded to 4* in the future. Different apartment/room sizes and equippage so pay attention to exactly what they offer you. People wanting more modern decor should look elsewhere as the decoration is classic and wallpaper is "heavy". Guests get 20% discount in the restaurant. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.7angels.cz.
3*. Hotel Prague Golden Age. Renovated and opened in 2006 it's located in Havelska on the border of the Old Town and the New Town. Old Town Square and Wenceslas Squres are 2-3 minutes walk. Front facing rooms overlook the market. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.praguegoldenage.com.
3*. Old Prague Hotel. This is the Expres hotel rebranded after a brief renovation with a different name (a trick becoming more popular here). I recommend the type1 rooms for small families on a budget as you get a good room size. Type2 rooms are a standard double with shared bathroom. Twin/Basic rooms come in different sizes but are generally singles with their own bathroom. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.oldpraguehotel.cz.
3*. Hotel Rubicon. Right at the edge of the Old Town but still only a 5 minute walk to the square. This could also be called a sport hotel as it offers a pretty good gym and 6 squash courts (10% off for guests). Looks like you are walking into a school when you arrive. Basic 3 star with lots of room options (some are very small rooms), but I guess they think you will not be in the room much. Great on-site restaurant/bar. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelrubicon.cz.
3*. Residence Leon D'Oro. Located in Havelska at the St Gallus end (not the market end). Converted residential building. Very spacious rooms with kitchenette. Free WIFI in all rooms. Excellent value for a high-end three star. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.pragueleondoro.com.
2*. Pension Corto. Central location with front rooms overlooking the popular Havelska street market. Overpriced in the low season and not so great value in the high season either. You can get a good deal for a room on the 5th floor if you are prepared to take the stairs. All rooms are en-suite and have tea/coffee making facility. Central location, nothing else to recommend. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.corto.cz.
2-3*. Pension Borsov. Only 5 rooms. Buried in the Old Town. Strange check-in procedure (You have to walk to a nearby travel agent to get the key). No double glazing so if there's a noise outside, you'll hear it. Great vegetarian restaurant right next door. Rooms are numbered based on the floor (3 floors, no lift). Biggest of the rooms is #11 on the ground. No webpage but many booking sites offer reservations here.
2*. Pension Accord. This hotel has a misleading/unclear webpage. It is a five minute walk to the Old Town Square using the pleasant Tynsky Dvur courtyard. You get breakfast but, it's at a cafe down the road which doesn't open until 9am. Basic ammenities for Prague accommodation which lists itself as "boutique B&B" and only ten rooms. Now charging too much for what you get. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.accordprague.com.
2*. Pension Avalon. Also known as "Pension Avalon Tara" or just "Pension Tara" and has 40 rooms. Very Central i.e. front facing rooms overlook the Havelska street market. This Prague accommodation has basic amenities (includes a mini fridge in all rooms), clean but, no emphasis on style or decoration. Largest rooms sleep four in the "Czech double" format (two double sized beds with 4 separate matresses and quilts i.e. a marriage bed). I think it's a little overpriced for the standard but, if you want central then take a look. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pensiontara.net.
2*. Hostel Tyn. The hostel has 17 rooms of various sizes. No en-suite. Maximum 5 sharing. No freebies like breakfast or internet etc. Prices start at 400kc (dorm). You are paying above average for a very central but, quiet location less than 1 minute to the Old Town Square. Also in the same block is the Beas-Dhaba vegetarian restaurant. I recommend this place for those wanting central and secure location. As a guide, you will find this Prague hostel homepage at www.hosteltyn.com.
2*. Old Prague Hostel. This is on the border of Old Town and Namesti Republiky. Lowest price is 10 Euros (8 Dorm) rising to 40 Euros for a private single occupied room. Rooms with 4 or 5 beds (usually 2 bunks and a single) have a separate bath/wc. 2 minute walk to the Namesti Republiky metro/tram and a 6 minute walk to the Old Town Square. Free breakfast and internet. As a guide, you will find this Prague hostel homepage at www.oldpraguehostel.com.
2*. Prague Square Hostel. This is the sister hostel to "Old Prague Hostel" listed above. Same pricing but there are no separate room wc/bath options and this hostel is a bit bigger with dorms sleeping 10. Free breakfast and internet. As a guide, you will find this Prague hostel homepage at www.praguesquarehostel.com.
2*. Ritchies Hostel. This has a great location but goes downhill after that. Now part hostel and part hotel. Very lacking in the "friendly" stakes and it's a noisy street. Includes breakfast. No en-suite. Cleanliness issue at peak times when cleaners seem to be banned from the building. If you want central then this is an option but, you want clean and secure then check other hostels listed here before this place. As a guide, you will find this Prague hostel homepage at www.ritchieshostel.cz.
2*. Hostel Franz Kafka. Opened in 2009 in Kaprova (links the Old Town Square with the river road) at the Kafka Square end of the road. Prices are competitive and low season dorm beds go for less than 10 Euros but its not been open long enough for proper reviews. An option for people who want to stay central. Breakfast available but not included in price. Prague hostels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.czechhostelfranzkafka.com.
2*. Travellers Hostel. Also known as Pension Dlouha (but it's definitely a hostel). One of the original hostels, it used to be recommended by me but, now overtaken by Tyn Hostel, Czech Inn and Miss Sophies. Travellers has the "pack'em and stack'em" business attitude now and they've drifted into apartments as well. I hear too many reports of people staying one night and then moving onto somewhere else (some don't even stay the night........). As a guide, you will find this Prague hostel homepage at www.travellers.cz.
