Area Introduction
The Old Town Square is officially the "tourist centre" of Prague. By geographical area it is also the smallest. The area is less than 1000 square metres but, it packs in some of the best options for food, drink, culture and all types of accommodation. In 1338 it was granted permission for it's own Town Hall. Situated between the majority of the New Town and the Jewish Quarter, it is never more than 5 minutes to anywhere else in the Old Town. It would be approximately a 35 minute slow walk to Prague Castle.

If you've not booked your hotel then Living Prague recommends the following local booking agent.

5*. Four Seasons has "Allegro" the current No.1 restaurant in 2006. Great history. Spent three years building this five star hotel, opened in 2002, got flooded, closed and opened again 6 months later. It's the Four Seasons. Top class. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.fourseasons.com/prague.
5*. Grand Hotel Bohemia is one of the older five star Hotels in Prague which in the current market means it could be considered a deluxe four star based on the level of service. Older means that generally you have larger rooms than normal. Quiet location but still only a five minute walk along Celetna to get to the Old Town Square. Never heard any complaints from here which is rare. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.grandhotelbohemia.cz.
5*. Hotel Pariz is often associated with the words "charming, "fabulous" and "classical". One of the original 5 star hotels in Prague. Bordered on two sides by minor roads so it's active but, quiet. It's a "must see" for people interested in Art Nouveau (especially the Sarah Bernhardt restaurant). Professional staff. Communal areas are spacious and luxurious. Rooms are reasonably spacious for a five star hotel in Prague. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotel-pariz.cz.
5*. Hotel Buddha Bar. Something different this way comes. I hope Ray Bradbury would excuse me twisting his title a little but, 2008 expects the arrival of the latest "lifestyle" hotel in Jakubska of all places (behind the Tyn church and 90 seconds walk to the Old Town Square). Be prepared for dark red and incense in your face. It appears to have the five star service, looks great in the pictures and as with all "lifestyle" hotels it comes complete with it's own pampering and "eatertainment" (yes I have spelt it correctly) centres. I wish it well. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.buddha-bar-hotel.cz.
5*. Hotel U Prince is again one of the original five star hotels. Rooms are classically decorated (visible wood beams and frescos in some). Front facing rooms have a view of the Old Town Square itself. Very scenic public cafe/restaurant on the roof. Ground floor restaurant is generally taken over by tourists in the evening (live music nightly). Some issues with staff attitude but, nothing that should spoil the trip. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteluprince.cz.
5*. Hotel Intercontinental is the "frequent flyer king" in Prague so staff professionalism is standard. Lots of business traffic booking double rooms and using points for upgrades to suites etc. Purpose built hotel so all rooms are square etc not like the older five star hotel options like U Prince at Pariz as listed earlier. River facing rooms have castle view as well. The rooftop restaurant is very pleasant in the evening. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.icprague.com.
5*. Hotel President got a refit in 2003/4 following flood damage which kept it's five star hotel rating but, made it far more recommendable. It's next to the Intercontinental but, doesn't have the same aura. Perfectly good business hotel with a special business floor. Front facing rooms have river/castle view. Rear facing rooms above the 3rd floor have Old Town rooftop view. Also has a Casino. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelpresident.cz.
5*. Hotel Ventana opened in 2005. It's a "flat iron" hotel (the thin end has a view of the Old Town Square). The five star hotel is built above commercial premesis (Versace) and takes the upper floors. Rooms range from double up to Deluxe suite. Rooms facing "Stupartska" face the rear of the Tyn Church. Rooms facing "Celetna" have the busy pedestrian street view. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.ventana-hotel.net.

5*. The five star Hotel Iron Gate has 44 rooms and suites. It's one road back from the Old Town Square but it's a quiet road. Top floor front facing rooms have a view of the Old Town Hall. The street is very Bohemian with small cafes, art galleries, jazz club, restaurants and tea rooms etc. One of my favourite areas. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.irongate.cz.
5*. Lots of hotels with "Grand" in the name here. The five star Grand Hotel Praha is the one on the Old Town Square facing the Orloj. Room 213 is the most sought after. Professional, friendly staff, stylish decor but, it's the front facing view which sells it. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.grandhotelpraha.cz.
5*. The Old Town Square Hotel and Residence is about the newest five star hotel/residence in Prague at the moment (Nov 2006). Directly overlooks the main part of Old Town Square. Front facing rooms have the view of the whole Square (Town Hall, St Nicholas Church, Tyn Church). Rooms facing "Zelezna" have a restricted view of the Town Hall. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.otsh.com.
4*. Ungelt is a four star apartment hotel. One side of the hotel overlooks the Tyn Courtyard but, the entry is in the side street called "Stupartska". Ten fully equipped apartments (separate kitchen) in the building with three apts having a view of the rear of the Tyn church. In my opinion the courtyard facing apts (back) are the best. One minute walk to the Old Town Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.ungelt.cz.
4*. The four star Hotel Maximilian was once an independent "classic style" hotel but it was renovated into a much more "contemporary" style i.e. more glass, less wood. Quiet location but only a five minute walk to the Old Town Square. Consistently in Pragues' top 10 hotels even with the increased competition. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.maximilianhotel.com.
4*. Hotel Astoria is one of the old four star class which is suffering from the new high standard being set for this class in Prague. Perfectly nice hotel, quiet street (same street as for Accord, Central, Mejstrik and Josef). Fifth and sixth floor front facing rooms have rooftop views. Manual aircon. Five minute walk to the Old Town Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelastoria.cz.
4*. The location sells it with it's quiet area but, two minutes walk to the Jewish Quarter or 5 minutes to the Old Town Square. Hotel Bellagio was formerly an old apartment block but, partitioning has reduced the original rooms size to less than average for the four star hotel class. No airconditioning in this hotel. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.bellagiohotel.cz.
4*. The four star Hotel Casa Marcello is what I consider as a "chic but, charming" hotel suited to couples who would go for a modern hotel in quiet historic surroundings. Also commonly listed as a "romantic" hotel. It has the nice "Agnes" restaurant (great in the outside courtyard in nice weather). Spacious suites. Look out for the "3 day package" which appears very popular. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.casa-marcello.cz.
4*. The Hotel Antik (may also be called Hotel Antik Garni but this is not the "Hotel Antik City"). ) is a three minute walk to the Old Town Square. It's located in Dlouha (Long Road). Thirty rooms are all doubles. The attic rooms have the most space followed by the courtyard facing corner rooms. Three floors but no lift. Breakfast room is great if you like art and breakfast in the courtyard during Summer months looks very nice. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelantik.cz. Now lists itself as a "boutique" hotel.
4*. The four star Hotel Cerny Slon (Black Elephant) is an independent hotel. Sixteen rooms. No suites but, the attic room is perfect for 4 people. Corner rooms are the best and have a reasonable view towards Tynsky Dvur (rooms at the far end of the corridors do not have the view as side facing rooms at the far end of the corridor face opposite buildings and the side of the Tyn church). The alleyway to the Old Town Square is busy day and night. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelcernyslon.cz.
4*. The four star Hotel Clementin sells itself as the "smallest building" in Prague. Actually it can only claim "narrowest building used as a hotel" but, it's still got some class. Only has 9 rooms over three floors. Public areas are a bit cramped but, the extra space went into the rooms which is good. It's located between the Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge (2 minute walk either way) but, it's just off the beaten track making it a central but quiet location. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.clementin.cz.

Find the best deal, compare prices and read what other travelers have to say about hotels in Prague.

4*. The four star Hotel Josef opened to rave reviews for it's ultra modern style. Independent hotel. Superior class rooms have the "glass bathroom" which can be a little unnerving for some. Professional staff. Always getting good reviews. Lots of nice restaurants and bars on this side of the Old Town Square. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteljosef.com.
4*. The four star Hotel Metamorphis has lots of options from suites and apartments down to single. Some rooms are inter-connectable. Courtyard facing rooms are the best. Breakfast is in the basement restaurant. Metamorphis also has a public restaurant on the ground floor and outside. The courtyard has a really nice fish restaurant called "Rybi Trh". Both hotel and restaurant are personally recommended. Old Town Square is literally 60 seconds walk. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelmetamorphis.cz.
4*. Hotel Modra Ruze is on the border of Old and New Towns. Opened in 2006. It used to be only the location of the Modra Ruze restaurant (basement) but, the building was developed into a four star hotel. Very historic 13th Century building formerly used as a bakers and a brewery amongst other things. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelmodraruze.cz.
4*. Hotel Rott is a 30 second walk from the Old Town Square. Located in "little square", the front facing rooms have all the views. It used to be a regular apartment house on top of commercial premesis. This was partitioned so, the size of the rooms are less than average for the four star hotel class unless you can get one of the "superior" class rooms. Non-front facing rooms overlook the internal courtyard. The hotel gets it's name from the Rott Steel company who owned the building before. Location is almost the best but, basic room size can let it down. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelrott.cz.
4*. Residence Retezova (or Residence Three Golden Chains as more recently known) is on my recommended list for apartment hotels. It has 9 different apartments of varying sizes. The hotel supplies ground plans of the different types (which is helpful). Dead-end street which makes it quiet but, only 3 minute walk from the Old Town Square. Reception is 24 hours but, you still get a key to the front door. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.residenceretezova.com.
3*. Hotel Betlem Club is located in the charming Betlemske Namesti (Bethlehem Square). There are 21 rooms with options from single bed in the attic to two-bed apartment type rooms. Decor is a little dated (lots of stainless steel and purple carpets etc) but, excellent location and value for money. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.betlemclub.cz.
3*. Hotel Central is another old 3* hotel struggling to keep it's rating. Underwent a refit (new bathrooms and fitting etc) in 2006 to spruce it up a bit. Higher floors facing the front have rooftop views. Five minutes walk from the Old Town Square. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.centralhotel.cz.
3*. Pension U Lilie (now calls itself a hotel) I recommend for the suites. Rooms 5 and 9 offer double bed accom with a living room for extra space. High season only 3300kc dropping to 2400 off season. Other rooms available. Excellent location at Liliova 15 in the heart of the Old town 200 metres from Charles Bridge. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pensionulilie.cz.
3*. This is for the U Tri Bubnu (at the three drums) Hotel. Next door is the apartment residence. Thirty seconds from the Old Town Square. The hotel attic room is the biggest (Room 14). In the apartment hotel, suite 5 is the attic area (sleeps six) but, not suitable for young children as it's a split floor with no real protection against falling through the bannister. Fine for adults. No lifts in the buildings so it's up the windy stairs. If the "suitcase" guy is in reception then the going tip rate is 50kc. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.utribubnu.cz.
3*. Cloister Inn hotel is one of my personal favourites. Frightening when you first arrive and see the bars on the windows (the whole street used to consist of various police offices and cells) but, inside is a modern friendly three star. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.cloister-inn.cz.
3*. U Stare Pani has 19 rooms spread over three floors. Nice street, restaurants, cafe, art galleries, tea rooms etc. U Stare Pani (at the old lady's) is popular for it's basement Jazz club. Rooms are reasonably sized for the class. Front facing rooms have street view. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.ustarepani.cz.

3*. Pension Red Chair is a 3 minute walk from Charles Bridge. If you are wondering why the homepage is "praguelion.com" then this is explained on the webpage. Located in Liliova at the "Bethlehem Square" end of the road. It has 15 rooms from small-single up to two rooms that can sleep four. Take advantage of the hotel taxi for airport transfers (good price). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.redchair.cz.
3*. Residence Masna is also known as the Masna Apartment House and is a set of regular modern Czech style apartments in a side road about a 3 minute walk from the Old Town Square. The apartments face either the street or the courtyard. Top floor apartments have rooftop views depending on the side, you see either the castle (courtyard side) or the Old Town (street side). Friendly staff, lots of ammenities, laundry, internet etc. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the residence homepage at www.masna-apartment-house.cz.
3*. Pension Green Garland has six doubles and three triples (all en-suite) on the third floor of a 14th Century commercial building in the Old Town. Little bit expensive for what you get but, nice family run place. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.greengarland.com.
2-3*. Pension Borsov has only 5 rooms. Buried in the Old Town. Strange check-in procedure (You have to walk to a nearby travel agent to get the key). No double glazing so if there's a noise outside, you'll hear it. Great vegetarian restaurant right next door. Rooms are numbered based on the floor (3 floors, no lift). Biggest of the rooms is #11 on the ground.
2*. Pension Accord is a five minute walk to the Old Town Square using the pleasant Tynsky Dvur courtyard. You get breakfast but, it's at a cafe down the road which doesn't open until 9am. Basic ammenities for a "guest house" and only ten rooms. I recommend this place for the price/location combination. Ask about the "cash discount". As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.accordprague.com.
2*. Pension Avalon also known as "Pension Avalon Tara" or just "Pension Tara" has 40 rooms. Very Central i.e. front facing rooms overlook the Havelska street market. Basic amenities (includes a mini fridge in all rooms), clean but, no emphasis on style or decoration. Largest rooms sleep four in the "Czech double" format (two double sized beds with 4 separate matresses and quilts i.e. a marriage bed). I think it's a little overpriced for the standard but, if you want central then take a look. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pensiontara.net.
2*. Hostel Tyn has 17 rooms of various sizes. No en-suite. Maximum 5 sharing. No freebies like breakfast or internet etc. Prices start at 400kc (dorm). Very central but, quiet location less than 1 minute to the Old Town Square. Also in the same block is the Beas-Dhaba vegetarian restaurant. I recommend this place for those wanting central and secure location. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at tyn-prague-hostels.cz.
2*. Ritchies Hostel has a great location but goes downhill after that. Very lacking in the "friendly" stakes and it's a noisy street. Includes breakfast. No en-suite. Cleanliness issue at peak times when cleaners seem to be banned from the building. If you want central then this is an option but, you want clean and secure then check the Tyn Hostel before this place. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.ritchieshostel.cz.
2*. Travellers Hostel is also known as Pension Dlouha (but it's definitely a hostel). It used to be recommended by me but, now overtaken by Tyn Hostel, Czech Inn and Miss Sophies. Travellers has the "pack'em and stack'em" business attitude now. I hear too many reports of people staying one night and then moving onto somewhere else (some don't even stay the night........). As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.travellers.cz.
