This page covers the areas Prague 4, Prague 6 and Prague 8. In general you will be using public transport and generally the tram network, especially at night.

All Prague accommodation descriptions are based on my own independent assessments. On this page you'll find the webpage of the accommodation concerned and there are also links to Trip Advisor where you can read the description supplied by the Prague accommodation itself plus photos and comments by guests who have already stayed there. There are also options for making bookings if you decide to make a reservation.

Prague 4 - Introduction and Recommendations

Prague 4 is a big area with many options from 5 star hotels to 2 star pensions and hostels. It starts on the other side of Vysehrad. On the river side of Prague 4 it has good tram connections and local bus connections. On the land side it extends 4km down the highway towards D1. Most of my recommendations are around the "night tram" routes and within 5 minutes of a metro station although the closer places are a 30 minute walk from the centre. The area offers extremely good value for people prepared to use public transport.

5* Corinthia Towers. Also called Hotel Corinthia Prague. I don't like 5 star hotels who skimp. Corinthia Towers is the second biggest hotel in Prague with 544 rooms. Advertises it's pool a lot but forgets to mention it's not included in the basic price. All the money went to the "executive" floors i.e. the furniture from these rooms was moved down to the lower rooms for the "package" crowd. Makes a lot of trade from business customers attending conferences in the Congress centre opposite. I don't recommend this place for regular tourists. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.corinthia.com.

4* Holiday Inn Congress. Holiday Inn Congress opened in 2001 and is part of the Vysehrad Congress centre complex so it's popular with the "company credit card" crowd. Two minute walk from the Vysehrad Metro (2 stops to Muzeum) or a 35 minute walk to the centre of town. A few local bars around but, nothing to shout about. Hotel won a "best interior design" after opening. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.holidayinn.cz.

4*. Hotel Barcelo. This is a little way out of town so expect to be using taxis or be prepared for a 15 minute walk to get to the closest metro. It's ok if you can get a good deal. More than 200 rooms is why it keeps the 4 star rating, not for service or amenities. Worryingly advertises itself as "open all year"!!. Attracts conference trade. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.barcelo.cz.

4*. Panorama. Used to be a Corinthia hotel but strangely dropped and sold to the CHI group. The Panorama had the money spent in reception not in the rooms. Another case of the Barcelo I'm afraid in that it seems to keep it's 4 star rating based on the number of rooms and not based on quality. You'll have a 15 minute walk to the closest metro. At night you'll want to use taxis. All rooms facing the city above the 5th floor have great views. They have the biggest covered hotel swimming pool but it's not free for guests. Yes that's right, a 4 star hotel that charges extra for the pool and fitness area so last time I looked it was 300kc for one hour but it did include the sauna and it is a great view. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.panoramahotelprague.com.

3*. Hotel Pankrac. Personally recommended for budget travellers. 22 rooms and on paper it looks like a bad choice but, so long as you know what to expect it's a great deal. Suited for people who have no problems using public transport. Friendly and informative staff. Built-in public restaurant. No views and the front facing rooms overlook a main road but, you can get a good package. Night tram service to this area. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelpankrac.cz.

3*. Hotel Otar. This is personally recommended for budget travellers. Basic Czech 3 star i.e. plain decor but, spotlessly clean. It's one of a pair of hotels approximately 75 metres away from each other (I prefer the Otar quieter location, Oya is on the main road). Friendly staff. As with the Hotel Pankrac, this place is recommended for people prepared to use public transport as it would be a 45 minute walk into the centre. Tram stop and metro are a 2 minute walk. Surprisingly good restaurant on site called "Harry's". As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelotar.cz.

3*. Hotel Inos. This is recommended for budget travellers prepared to use trams and walk a bit. Good option for people driving here with it's garage parking (250Kc per night). You have the option of a 5 minute walk to catch the tram (4 stops to the Old Town) or a 10 minute walk to catch the metro (three stops to Wenceslas). Either way it will be worth you buying a travel pass and both areas have a night service. Double rooms are all large enough for an extra bed and kids up to six are free. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelinos.com.

3*. Hotel Opatov. This is a Czech Czech (so good I named it twice) hotel. On the outskirts of the city but, only 2 minutes walk from the Opatov metro so, as long as you stay within the metro times it's easy to get into and out of town (18 minutes to the centre). Apartments (many have 2 separate bedrooms) are big and clean but, not stylish and have no kitchenette (fridge only). The food is what you'd find in your Czech Grandmothers kitchen. I've recommended this place for large families or groups who will not be partying to the wee hours. Also it's on the main highway between Prague and Brno so, it's popular with drivers who don't want to pay for central parking. Also close by is the "Opatov Twin" (same group) which is the budget side of the business. This is open only in the Summer months. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.horst.cz.

3*. Botel Racek. Located on the river at Podoli. I can't put my hand on my heart and say it's a 3 star. It needs a total refit to make that class. The thing here is how often do you get to stay on a floating boat hotel (personally I prefer the Admiral botel). This one has the advantage of being accessible by tram both night and day. It's opposite the biggest indoor/outdoor pool complex in Prague and next to "Zlute Lazne" (the beach party zone). Note that "elegant classic" style means lots of dark wood. Get a double if you can as the twins seem a bit narrow. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.botelracek-prague.cz.

2*. Pension Praha. Also known as "AV Pension Praha". This is on the other side of Prague and really I recommend it for families on budgets. Great in the Summer when the kids can use the pool and play in the garden while you relax on the terrace. Once there, your primary method of transport will be the metro which is a 5 minute walk followed by a 15 minute metro journey to Wenceslas Square. Taxi from the airport will be @800kc. I recommend that you buy 3 or 7 day pass (at the airport) as you will get your money's worth. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pension-praha.cz.

2*. Hostel Boathouse. This is personally recommended and is located on the riverfront at Branik. Accessible by trams both day and night (eight stops to the centre or approx 12 minutes). Open all year and VERY popular in the Summer because of it's close proximity to "Zlute Lazne" which is the beach party area of the riverside. Nice restaurants a bit further up the road. Personally recommended. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hostelboathouse.com.

Prague 6 - Introduction and Recommendations

Prague 6 is known mostly as the area containing the highest concentration of Embassies and Consulates outside of Mala Strana. It does in fact extend all the way out to the Airport. The recognised centre of Prague 6 for most people (including me) is Dejvice which has a big roundabout from which three or four main roads eminate. Most of the entries in this list are in that area. Dejvice has a metro stop and is the hub for bus services from the airport and tram services into the centre of town. The second area is around Petriny which is a large residential area served by tramlines 10 and 18.

4*. Crowne Plaza. The old "International Hotel" (little Empire State) was taken over by the Holiday Inn group in 1990. It was at the time one of the biggest buildings in Prague. Now it's one of the biggest and also furthest removed from the centre. You must really be prepared to use trams if you are ok with public transport. It would be a 30 minute walk to the Castle or one hour to the Old Town Square. It became known as "Crowne Plaza" when the Holiday Inn opened at the Congress Centre. Sister hotel at Strahov Monastery is much better. 254 quite spacious rooms with the normal Crowne Plaza spec and the normal increased services for "executive club" rooms. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.crowneplaza.com.

4*. Hotel Denisa. You would not believe that in 1999 this was still a 2* Pension. Two complete refits later (the last in 2008) and now it's a 4 star. Amazing what a bit of paint, a flat screen tv and some decent bed linen can do these days. Two minute walk from the Dejvicka Metro and also on the night/day tram route. Rooms are reasonably large and clean. A few nice bars and especially restaurants are a 5-10 minute walk. Three metro stops to Old Town and 4 stops for Wenceslas Square. Buy a travel pass. As a guide, the hotel is represented by www.avetravel.cz.

4*. Hotel Diplomat. This is often used by business trade as it is really the first large hotel you come to from the airport. It is close to the Dejvicka metro which gives fast access to the centre of town. Almost 400 rooms. If you are used to real 4* standard then you might be a little disappointed with the rooms and staff. I'm not a fan of big hotels at the best of times. Fast access to the airport is the selling point. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.diplomathotel.cz.

4*. Hotel Silenzio. Little bit out of the way but no more than a 5 minute walk downhill to the tramstop. From there it's one stop or a 5 minute walk to Dejvicka metro station. Then there are 3 stops to the Old Town Square and four stops to Wenceslas Square. This area also has 24 hour tram service or replacement night-bus. Hotel is quite stylish if a little expensive but expect either to use public transport or pay for taxis. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.silenziohotel.cz.

3*. DAP Hotel. Also known as Military Club Prague. An old Army building converted into conference rooms and a three star hotel. 51 rooms and four apartments. Good option for people wanting to stay close to the airport but still have the metro option for getting to and from the centre. Three metro stops to the Old Town Square and four stops to Wenceslas Square. Alternatively there is a tram service that runs 24 hours. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.daphotel.cz.

3*+. Hotel Villa Schwaiger. Tough to clasify. I'd like to rate it as a 4 star but the general room spec is not high enough. Very nice place with a pleasant garden. There is no public transport option so expect to be paying for taxis. A taxi from the hotel to Namesti Republiky (the easiest and fastest drop off area) should be @200kc. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.villaschwaiger.cz.

3*. Vetrnik B&B. This is personally recommended. The Opatrny family will be looking after you. Only six rooms in the building and what a building it is as well. You should really be back before the tram system shuts down around midnight or else be prepared to pay 400kc for a taxi ride. Unique place in peaceful surroundings. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.pensionvetrnik.wz.cz.

3* Hotel Aton. Little bit out of the way but so long as you don't mind a 5-10 minute walk you can get to both bus and tram routes that will get you into central Prague in about 15 mins. The hotel is a basic three star but prices vary on the room type and location in the building. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelaton.cz.

3* Hotel Hormeda. Almost the same location as the Aton. So long as you don't mind a 5-10 minute walk you can get to both bus and tram routes that will get you into central Prague in about 15 mins. Better quality than the Aton but, more expensive. Good value if you can get one of the rooms with a balcony and the hotel also has the best restaurant in the area. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelhormeda.cz.

2* Sporthotel Tatran. Basic, cheap, clean, free-parking, four tennis courts and a sand volleyball area. Four-bed room for 60 Euros including breakfast. Three minute walk to the tramline which also has a night service. Four stops to the Hradcanska metro station. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoteltatran.cz.

2* Penzion Chaloupka. Located in Stresovice and easily accessible 24 hours a day by tram which takes 20 minutes to get into the centre so you'll need a travel pass. Basic family-run pension. The apartment is especially recommended for it's value. Free secure parking. Nothing else in the area like bars or restaurants etc. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.penzionchaloupka.cz.

2* Na Stare Poste. Also called "at the old Post Office". Basic B&B with free parking included. Located about 100 metres from the Villa Schwaiger. Ideal place to stay if you like to ride a bike as there is an entry to Stromovka Park at the end of the road. No public transport so a taxi into the centre will be @200kc. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.nastareposte.ic.cz.

2*. Pension Jana B&B. This is in a classic Prague 6 building that has been divided into apartments. Good option for drivers (parking in the garden). You should really be back before the tram system shuts down around midnight or else be prepared to pay 400kc for a taxi ride. Reasonably peaceful surroundings (local train line is nearby). It's about a 1500 metre walk from Dejvice or 500 metres up or down the hill to get to the nearest tram stop. Good options for 4-6 people sharing as two of the flats have two/three separate bedrooms. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pensionjana.cz.

Prague 8 - Introduction and Recommendations

Prague 8 starts on the far side of Prague 1 on the other side of the highway. For example the Hilton Hotel is in Prague 8. The area closest to Prague 1 is residential with some office blocks but, the further down the road you go, the more industrial it becomes. My recommendations are around three main areas. The first is around the highway (Hilton, Mucha) which is a 20-30 minute walk to the Old Town. The second area is the Invalidovna metro (Olympik and Cechie) which is four metro stops to the centre of town. The third area is Ceskomoravska (Esprit, Arlington) which is six metro stops to the centre. All of my recommendations are a 3 minute walk or less from the metro station or the tramline with night service.

5*. Hilton Hotel. This is the biggest hotel in Prague based on room number with 788. Hilton members rave about how good it is. My own opinion is "great hotel, crap location". Rooms on the river or highway sides of the building may squeeze a view of the castle but, mostly you overlook either the canal or the six lane highway which marks the boundary of Prague 1 and Prague 8. A walk to the Old Town Square should take about 30 minutes at an average pace. The Florenc metro is 75 metres away but, I don't see many Hilton guests using the metro. You could spend you entire holiday here and never leave the hotel with all it's restaurants and amenities. Hotel underwent "modernisation work" in 2007/8. The Hilton Old Town opened in 2007. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.prague.hilton.com.

4*. Olympik (group). Hello hotel....translate your webpages please....Hotel Olympik, hotel Olympik Tristar and hotel Artemis are all in the same place and come under the same webpage (Tristar is a 3 star). This is an "outskirts" hotel which looks like a big tissue box stood on end i.e. no style. It has 319 rooms, some airconditioned. The hotel picks up a lot of "group" trade and last minute large groups especially. Be prepared to use the metro (4 stops to the centre). Four stars is based on number of rooms. Service does not rate 4. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.olympik.cz.

4*. Hotel Aida. Prague 8 Kobylisy. Part of the AVE hotels group. Nearly 50 rooms but no lift. Five metro stations from Wenceslas Square and the area is well served by day/night tram services. You must be prepared to use public transport or taxis will be expensive. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelaida.cz.

4*. Hotel Troja. Prague 8 Kobylisy. Five metro stations from Wenceslas Square and the area is well served by day/night tram services. Located on top of the hill so there are lots of rooms with stunning city views. Make sure when booking a double room as many have single beds and you may be put in the adjacent annexe if you want kingsize etc. Very nice breakfast area encompassing the conservatory/garden. If you are prepared to use public transport its a real bargain. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hoteltroja.cz.

4*. Hotel Alwyn. Prague 8 Karlin. Opened in 2008. Very nice hotel and one of the best in the area. Will become more popular when the area improves. Best to buy a travel pass as you'll be using either the metro or tram otherwise its a 30 minute walk to the Old Town Square. The tram stop is just around the corner (3 stops to Namesti Republiky). Nearest metro is Florenc (400 metres). Not much else in the area. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelalwyn.cz.

4*. Residence Three Domy. Prague 8 Karlin. Large building with 48 suites. All have separate bedrooms and kitchenette. Living room also has a sofabed. Contains a state of the art "Holmes Place" wellness and fitness centre. Buy a travel pass as you'll be using the metro or the night tram. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.residence3domy.cz.
Something Special: The pool.

3*. Hotel Cechie. This is a Sport Hotel actually quite close to the Olympik. I've used the squash courts here and also played football on the astroturf pitch. Get the idea? People staying here normally have some sport connection or else you are somebody wanting to combine sport with your holiday. 64 rooms (mostly singles and doubles). Picks up a lot of business trade for those for whom personal fitness is an issue. Recommended. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelcechie.cz.

3*. Hotel Esprit. This is great so long as you are happy to use public transport. Metro is 100 metres away (Ceskomoravska) and it's six stops to the centre. There's also a tram option both night and day in this area. Friendly professional staff. Hotels in this area may seem quite far out but, trade has increased since the Sazka Arena (now the O2 Arena) was built just behind the metro station so often the weekends are booked early for events like ice hockey etc. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotel-esprit.cz.

3*. Hotel Ibis Karlin. This is great so long as you are happy to use public transport i.e. either tram or metro. The krizikova metro station is about 100 metres away which will get you to Wenceslas Square in three stops and the tram stop is almost outside the hotel which will get you to Namesti Republiky in 6 minutes. 226 rooms of pretty good size and value (it's 20 Euros a night less than the Ibis Wenceslas) and they have options for connecting rooms for families. Nothing much in the area apart from one or two restaurants. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their group homepage is at www.accorhotels.com. Accorhotels.com: Best Price Guarantee

3*. Hotel Arlington. This is two streets away from the Esprit. Smaller place with only 25 rooms, much more of a family run place. Locals use the restaurant. Great place if you are looking to see a show at the O2 Arena during your break. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.arlingtonhotel.cz.

3*. Hotel Mucha. This is just on the Prague 8 side of the highway in the first block after the Florenc metro. This area was largely renovated and refurbished after the 2002 flood, including the Mucha. The rooms are spacious and clean if not to be considered modern. Lots of Mucha art and general Art Nouveau decoration. Nice beer garden opposite in the Summer. Three metro stops to the centre of town (Wenceslas Square) or a 25-30 minute walk. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel is managed by www.avetravel.cz.

3*. Hotel Jurys Inn. This is just on the Prague 8 side of the highway in the first block after the Florenc metro and opposite the Mucha. 210 rooms with pretty good size and spec including airconditioning and free internet. Some rooms big enough for 2+2 (children). Attracts conference traffic (underground car park with 40 spaces). Their description of "short walk to Charles Bridge" is stretching things a bit. As a guide, you will find the hotel webpage is at www.jurysinns.com.

3*. Pension Florenc. This is located at Sokolovska 41 which is 150 metres from Florenc metro station. Regular trams will get you as far as Namesti Republiky (5 minute walk to the Old Town Square) or 3 metro stops will get you to Wenceslas Square. No Breakfast. Private or shared facilities. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.pensionflorenc.com.

3*. Hotel Henrietta. Kobylisy. Five metro stations from Wenceslas Square and the area is well served by day/night tram services. You must be prepared to use public transport or taxis will be expensive. Basic services and quite good value. Sister hotel of the 3* Aron in Zizkov (listed in the Zizkov page). So if bumping is an issue that's where you'll be headed. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.henrietta.cz.

2*. Pension U Hofmanu. Prague 8 - Kobylisy. Good location so long as you are ok to take a tram into the centre or a short walk to the metro (5 stops to Wenceslas). Either way you'll need a travel pass. Excellent option for those wanting basic apartments (with kitchenette) and have the option of a buffet breakfast. Nice beer/breakfast garden. Parking on-site but not secure. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.uhofmanu.cz.

2*. Hostel A1. Prague 8 - Sokolovska. Good location so long as you are ok to take a tram into the centre or a short walk to the metro. Either way you'll need a travel pass. Closest metro is Palmovka on the yellow line (B). It's a fairly busy street but it has many shops, some bars and restaurants etc. The area was mostly renovated after the 2002 flood. It's equal cheapest in Prague and cheapest in the area allowing that you'll need to buy a travel pass etc. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.a1hotel.cz.
