Vysehrad - Introduction and Recommendations
Vysehrad is the area between the Nusle Bridge and the river. This is fully residential and accommodation is generally around the 3 star range. It's a 30-40 minute walk into town but, has excellent tram connections day and night. Most visited places in the area are the church of St Peter and St Paul, the associated cemetery and the riverfront Cubist buildings.
3*. Apartment Vysehrad has 6 apartments, all with kitchenette. Family run. Five minute walk to nearest tram stop and then a five stop ride into the centre (get off at Narodni Metro). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.apart-vysehrad.cz.
3*. Arcadia Residence has large and small apartments all with a kitchenette. Five minute walk to riverfront and four stops to the centre of town. Child friendly. Pascale (owner) goes the extra yard to make sure your trip is ok (free travel pass as well if you stay a week) and you get breakfast served to your room here. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.arcadiaresidence.com.
3*. Hotel Standard is on the riverfront. Nice view but, will be a little noisy if the window is open at the front. Various room sizes. Apts with 1 or 2 bedrooms and kitchen. Four tram stops to the centre or a 20 minute walk. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.standard.cz.
3*. Hotel Amadeus located next to Vysehrad Castle in Slavojova. Good value. Larger original rooms at the front and newer smaller rooms in the annexe. Family run. Secure parking available if booked in advance. 10 minute walk to the riverfront. Nearest tram stop is 100 metres.
3*. Hotel Union is one of the classically styled hotels in Prague in Jaromirova approximately a 10 minute walk to the riverfront or 6 stops on the tram to the centre (a stop is opposite the hotel). Nothing much in the area apart from the popular "Pravek" (pronounced pravee-eck) restaurant and a couple of small bars. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelunion.cz.
2*. Pension ST Jana looks at first glance like you are going into the church. Fourteen rooms of varying size. Family run. Service with a smile. Tram stop 1 minute walk from the pension and it's three stops to the centre. Front facing rooms can be noisy if window is open. Personally recommended.

Vinohrady - Introduction and Recommendations
Vinohrady is the area on the other side of the highway above the National Museum. It extends about 800 metres up the road called Vinohradska and approx 300 metres to one side to include the area around Namesti Miru (metro). On the other side it borders Zizkov. All types of accommodation. Good area for small bars, independent shops and restaurants etc. Vinohradska is mainly accessed by tram (night service) but, it has metro stations at Jiriho z Podebrad (Zizkov, Prague 3 border) and Namesti Miru. In Namesti Miru look out for the "Cheers" bar and the Sahara Cafe. My own favourite restaurant bar in the area is "L'Ardois" on the corner of Bruselska and Londynska.
5*. Hotel Le Palais is the only 5 star in the area. Again this is on the far side of Namesti Miru. Very quiet as it's at the end of a street. Consistently ranked in the top 5 Prague hotels. It's a 15 minute walk to the nearest metro at IP Pavlova but, the tram stop is only 2 minutes. It's possible to walk to the centre in about 25 minutes. Stylish and luxurious. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.palaishotel.cz.
4*. Courtyard Marriott opened 2006 as part of the overall Flora business complex. Standard Marriott service and fittings i.e. Frequent Flyer country. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.marriott.com.
4*. Hotel Ametyst is over on the Namesti Miru side. You'll have a 10 minute walk to the metro station or 5 minutes to the tramline in Belehradska. A few small bars and restaurants in the area but, nothing rowdy. If you use the tram then the area around IP Pavlova has the most action closest to you and is good value compared with really central bars. The hotel itself has 84 rooms, reasonably quiet street and walking into the centre will take approximately 30 minutes. You can also SKYPE the hotel. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelametyst.cz.
3*. Pension Balbin sometimes called Hotel Balbin. Sixteen rooms mostly doubles but, with triples and a 4-bed plus a 2-bedroom family apartment. Fifteen minute walk into the centre. Closest metro is Muzeum. They offer free transport from the airport and free internet/wifi. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.balbin.cz.
3*. Belgicka Residence is an award winning apartment residence. Twenty apartments ranging from studio to 2-bed. Pleasant area very close to Namesti Miru (nearest metro). Two metro stops to the centre or a 20 minute walk. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.mamaison-residences.com/prague.
3*. Apartment Karee in Londynska which is a 5 minute walk from either Namesti Miru metro or the tram/metro at IP Pavlova. Recommended for the 2 bedroom LUX apartments which if two couples are sharing offers excellent value. Children under 6 FREE, children 6-12 - 10 Euros per night. Late checkout options. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.karee.cz.
3*. Hotel Tosca is located 2 minutes walk from Namesti Miru. No frills. Friendly staff. You must be prepared to use the metro system in most cases although a tram is an option to Karlovo Namesti (Charles Square). Tram stops right in front of the hotel. A little expensive for my liking. Good for a long weekend and the fifth floor has aircon. Often has discounts of up to 30% for last minute direct booking. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotel-tosca.cz.
2*. Pension Domov Mladeze also called Pension Jana (there are two pension Jana's here) is at the far end of Vinohradska, a 5 minute walk from the Flora centre/metro/tram. Area is very architecturally appealing. Hotel is basic (floats between 2 star and hostel) but, smart and clean. Quiet cobblestoned street. Various local bars and restaurants within 5 minutes walk. A walk into town would take approx 40 mins or 4 stops on the metro.
2*. Hostel Czech Inn is possibly the highest standard hostel at present with the exception of Miss Sophies (October 2006). Lots of new fittings etc. Attracts a good crowd by the sound of it. Not the cheapest by far and you'll be using trams or the metro most of the time (buy a travel pass). Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.czech-inn.com.

Zizkov - Introduction and Recommendations
Zizkov is generally accepted as the cheaper end of the market although it has excellent transport links into central areas and it is close to the exclusive Vinohrady area. Accommodation is mostly in the 3 star and hostel range as seen below. I don't recommend the area if you are driving here. Two roads have the bulk of the choice, Seifertova is the main road and has the tramline and Borivojova is two streets over in the direction of Vinohrady.
4*. Hotel Teatrino is located on the junction of Borivojova and Seifertova. Nearest tram stop is 100 metres. Refurbished hotel turned into a 4 star but, more accessible for people prepared to use trams. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.arcotel.cz.
4*. Hotel Carlton is in Taboritska. 50 rooms which are more spacious than average. Quiet street. It's a 5 minute walk to get to the nearest tram stop in Seifertova. Makes the 4 star class but, only just. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelcarlton.cz.
3*. Hotel City Crown is another "cheap and cheerful" option (lists itself as three and a half stars). The road looks a bit shabby but, the hotel is fine. Quite large rooms and decor is Swedish i.e. Ikea. Five minute uphill walk to nearest tram stop. Strictly budget travellers. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.citycrown.cz.
3*. Hotel Ariston is what I call "cheap and cheerful". Expect basic facilities and you won't be disappointed. Front facing rooms will be noisy if the window is open i.e. Summer. There's also an annexe to the main hotel. Thirty minute walk or 6 minutes by tram to centre. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelariston.cz.
3*. Hotel Olsanka is of the Czech old school. Was Czech "superior" standard which is 3 star to the rest of us. Decor has not changed much. Hotel is clean and a tram stop is right outside. Rooms at the back are quiet and higher floors have a great view. Five minute walk to the new Flora shopping centre and metro. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelolsanka.cz.
3*. Hotel Seifert has 20 "value for money" rooms. Expect higher than hostel standard but, still with hostel atmosphere. Tram stop right outside. Front facing rooms are noisy if window is open. Twenty minutes walk to centre or 6 minutes by tram. Recommended.
3*. Hotel Victoria, also known as City Partner Victoria, is also in Seifertova. Corner facing doubles have the most room. Child discounts available i.e. an extra bed in a corner facing room (under 6 are free, 6-12 get 50% off). Twenty minutes walk to centre or 6 minutes by tram. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelvictoria.cz.
2*. Carpe Diem (B&B Association) is another cheap and cheerful option. Rooms that can handle different combinations of beds. Family owned and run. Prices per person. It's at the top of the road so expect a 40 minute walk into the centre or 5 stops on the tram. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.bedandbreakfastprague.com.
2*. Hostel Clown and Bard is in Borivojova but it's only a 5 minute walk to the tramline in Seifertova. Opinions vary along the lines of "laid back", "great", "old and dated". It depends on the time of year I guess. I used to recommend this place more as it was cheap. Now I've switched to Miss Sophies. Young crowd and has the "atmosphere" often looked for by hostel clientele. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.clownandbard.com.
2*. Hostel Elf brings to mind words like cheap and clean. Right next to the main train line so it can get noisy. Public can use the bar...... and often do. As a guide, you will find the hostel homepage at www.hostelelf.cz.

Prague 4 - Introduction and Recommendations
Prague 4 is a big area with many options from 5 star hotels to 2 star pensions and hostels. It starts on the other side of Vysehrad. On the river side of Prague 4 it has good tram connections and local bus connections. On the land side it extends 4km down the highway towards D1. Most of my recommendations are around the "night tram" routes and within 5 minutes of a metro station although the closer places are a 30 minute walk from the centre. The area offers extremely good value for people prepared to use public transport.
Corinthia Towers 5*. I don't like 5 star hotels who skimp. Corinthia Towers is the second biggest hotel in Prague with 544 rooms. Advertises it's pool a lot but forgets to mention it's not included in the basic price. All the money went to the "executive" floors i.e. the furniture from these rooms was moved down to the lower rooms for the "package" crowd. Makes a lot of trade from business customers attending conferences in the Congress centre opposite. I don't recommend this place for regular tourists. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.corinthia.cz.
Holiday Inn Congress 4*. Holiday Inn Congress opened in 2001 and is part of the Vysehrad Congress centre complex so it's popular with the "company credit card" crowd. Two minute walk from the Vysehrad Metro (2 stops to Muzeum) or a 35 minute walk to the centre of town. A few local bars around but, nothing to shout about. Hotel won a "best interior design" after opening. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.holidayinn.cz.
4*. Hotel Barcelo is a little way out of town so expect to be using taxis or be prepared for a 20 minute walk to get to the closest metro. It's ok if you can get a good deal. More than 200 rooms is why it keeps the 4 star rating, not for service or amenities. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.barcelo.cz.
4*. Corinthia has two hotels in Prague. The Panorama had the money spent in reception not in the rooms. Another case of the Barcelo I'm afraid in that it seems to keep it's 4 star rating based on the number of rooms and not based on quality. You'll have a 15 minute walk to the closest metro. At night you'll want to use taxis. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.corinthia.cz.
3*. Personally recommended for budget travellers. Hotel Pankrac has 22 rooms. On paper it looks like a bad choice but, so long as you know what to expect it's a great deal. Suited for people who have no problems using public transport. Friendly and informative staff. Built-in public restaurant. No views and the front facing rooms overlook a main road but, you can get a good package. Night tram service to this area. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelpankrac.cz.
3*. Hotel Otar is personally recommended for budget travellers. Basic Czech 3 star i.e. plain decor but, spotlessly clean. It's one of a pair of hotels approximately 75 metres away from each other (I prefer the Otar quieter location, Oya is on the main road). Friendly staff. As with the Hotel Pankrac, this place is recommended for people prepared to use public transport as it would be a 45 minute walk into the centre. Tram stop and metro are a 2 minute walk. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelotar.cz.
3*. Hotel Opatov is a Czech Czech (so good I named it twice) hotel. On the outskirts of the city but, only 2 minutes walk from the Opatov metro so, as long as you stay within the metro times it's easy to get into and out of town (18 minutes to the centre). Rooms (many have separate bedrooms) are big and clean but, not stylish. The food is what you'd find in your Czech Grandmothers kitchen. I've recommended this place for large families or groups who will not be partying to the wee hours. Also it's on the main highway between Prague and Brno so, it's popular with drivers who don't want to pay for central parking. Also close by is the "Opatov Twin" (same group) which is the budget side of the business. This is open only in the Summer months. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.horst.cz.
2*. Pension Praha is also known as "AV Pension Praha". This is on the other side of Prague and really I recommend it for families on budgets. Great in the Summer when the kids can use the pool and play in the garden while you relax on the terrace. Once there, your primary method of transport will be the metro which is a 5 minute walk followed by a 15 minute metro journey to Wenceslas Square. Taxi from the airport will be @800kc. I recommend that you buy 3 or 7 day pass (at the airport) as you will get your money's worth. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pension-praha.cz.
3*. Botel Racek is on the river at Podoli. I can't put my hand on my heart and say it's a 3 star. It needs a total refit to make that class. The thing here is how often do you get to stay on a floating boat hotel (personally I prefer the Admiral botel). This one has the advantage of being accessible by tram both night and day. It's opposite the biggest indoor/outdoor pool complex in Prague and next to "Zlute Lazne" (the beach party zone). As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.botelracek.cz.
2*. Hostel Boathouse is personally recommended and is located on the riverfront at Branik. Accessible by trams both day and night (eight stops to the centre or approx 12 minutes). VERY popular in the Summer because of it's close proximity to "Zlute Lazne" which is the beach party area of the riverside. Has an excellent restaurant called Soho+ and a nice Greek restaurant a bit further up the road. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hostelboathouse.com.

Prague 6 - Introduction and Recommendations
Prague 6 is known mostly as the area containing the highest concentration of Embassies and Consulates outside of Mala Strana. It does in fact extend all the way out to the Airport. The recognised centre of Prague 6 for most people (including me) is Dejvice which is a big roundabout from which three or four main roads eminate. Most of the entries in this list are in that area. Dejvice has a metro stop and is the hub for bus services from the airport and tram services into the centre of town. The second area is around Petriny which is a large residential area served by tramlines 10 and 18.
4*. The old "International Hotel" (little Empire State) was taken over by the Holiday Inn group in 1990. It was at the time one of the biggest buildings in Prague. Now it's one of the biggest and also furthest removed from the centre. You must really be prepared to use trams if you are ok with public transport. It would be a 30 minute walk to the Castle or one hour to the Old Town Square. It became known as "Crowne Plaza" when the Holiday Inn opened at the Congress Centre. Hit or miss for the rooms. Some people report problems, others say all ok.
4*. Hotel Diplomat is often used by business trade as it is really the first large hotel you come to from the airport. It is close to the Dejvicka metro which gives fast access to the centre of town. Almost 400 rooms. If you are used to real 4* standard then you might be a little disappointed with the rooms and staff. I'm not a fan of big hotels at the best of times. Fast access to the airport is the selling point. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.goldentulip.com.
3*. Hotel Denisa is really a B&B which has climbed up the ladder a bit. Two minute walk from the Dejvicka Metro and also on the night/day tram route. Rooms are reasonably large and clean. A few nice bars and especially restaurants are a 5-10 minute walk. Hotel went through a period of "overbooking" but, seems to be a bit more stable now. As a guide, the hotel is represented by www.avetravel.cz.
2*. Pension Jana B&B is in a classic Prague 6 building that has been divided into apartments. Good option for drivers (parking in the garden). You should really be back before the tram system shuts down around midnight or else be prepared to pay 400kc for a taxi ride. Reasonably peaceful surroundings (local train line is nearby). It's about a 1500 metre walk from Dejvice or 500 metres up or down the hill to get to the nearest tram stop. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.pensionjana.cz.
3*. Vetrnik B&B is personally recommended. The Opatrny family will be looking after you. Only six rooms in the building and what a building it is as well. You should really be back before the tram system shuts down around midnight or else be prepared to pay 400kc for a taxi ride. Unique place in peaceful surroundings. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.pensionvetrnik.wz.cz.

Prague 8 - Introduction and Recommendations
Prague 8 starts on the far side of Prague 1 on the other side of the highway. For example the Hilton Hotel is in Prague 8. The area closest to Prague 1 is residential with some office blocks but, the further down the road you go, the more industrial it becomes. My recommendations are around three main areas. The first is around the highway (Hilton, Mucha) which is a 20-30 minute walk to the Old Town. The second area is the Invalidovna metro (Olympik and Cechie) which is four metro stops to the centre of town. The third area is Ceskomoravska (Esprit, Arlington) which is six metro stops to the centre. All of my recommendations are a 3 minute walk or less from the metro station or the tramline with night service.
5*. Hilton Hotel is the biggest hotel in Prague based on room number with 788. Hilton members rave about how good it is. My own opinion is "great hotel, crap location". Rooms on the river or highway sides of the building may squeeze a view of the castle but, mostly you overlook either the canal or the six lane highway which marks the boundary of Prague 1 and Prague 8. A walk to the Old Town Square should take about 30 minutes at an average pace. The Florenc metro is 75 metres away but, I don't see many Hilton guests using the metro. You could spend you entire holiday here and never leave the hotel with all it's restaurants and amenities. Hotel will be undergoing "modernisation work" in 2007/8. A new Hilton opened a bit closer to the Old Town in 2007. As a guide, you will find the hotel group homepage at www.prague.hilton.com.
4*. This is not the "Olympic Tristar" (which is across the road from the Olympik). This is an "outskirts" hotel which looks like a big tissue box stood on end i.e. no style. It has 319 rooms, some airconditioned. The hotel picks up a lot of "group" trade and last minute large groups especially. Be prepared to use the metro (4 stops to the centre). Four stars is based on number of rooms. Service does not rate 4. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.olympik.cz.
3*. Hotel Cechie is a Sport Hotel actually quite close to the Olympik. I've used the squash courts here and also played football on the astroturf pitch. Get the idea? People staying here normally have some sport connection or else you are somebody wanting to combine sport with your holiday. 64 rooms (mostly singles and doubles). Picks up a lot of business trade for those for whom personal fitness is an issue. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelcechie.cz.
3*. Hotel Esprit is great so long as you are happy to use public transport. Metro is 100 metres away (Ceskomoravska) and it's six stops to the centre. There's also a tram option both night and day in this area. Friendly professional staff. Hotels in this area may seem quite far out but, trade has increased since the Sazka Arena was built just behind the metro station so often, weekends are booked early for events like ice hockey etc. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotel-esprit.cz.
3*. Hotel Arlington is two streets away from the Esprit. Smaller place with only 25 rooms, much more of a family run place. Redecorated in 2004. Locals use the restaurant. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.arlingtonhotel.cz.
3*. Hotel Mucha is just on the Prague 8 side of the highway in the first building after the Florenc metro. This area was largely renovated and refurbished after the 2002 flood, including the Mucha. The rooms are spacious and clean if not to be considered modern. Lots of Mucha art and general Art Nouveau decoration. Nice beer garden opposite in the Summer. Three metro stops to the centre of town (Wenceslas Square) or a 25-30 minute walk. Recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel is managed by www.avetravel.cz.
