Mala Strana Accommodation

Mala Strana is literally translated as Lesser Side. It has been historically recorded that this area of Prague was settled in the 5th Century and that the current city name known in Czech as "Praha" can be traced to this time when it was known by it's old Slavic name of "Prah" meaning threshold.
This is the area squeezed between the castle and the river. Generally, Mala Strana occupies the flat area at the base of the castle extending about 400 metres along the main road. To one side the border is the Malostranska metro station. On the other side the border is the "Hunger Wall" that separates Mala Strana and Ujezd. All riverfront property in this stretch is also Mala Strana but, can also be called Kampa if it is located on the Kampa Island. This area has many nice bars and restaurants and is considered less rowdy than the other side of the river. Most cultural activities are up at the castle. All Prague hotel accommodation descriptions are based on my own independent assessments. On this page you'll find the webpage of the Prague accommodation concerned and there are also links to Trip Advisor where you can read the description supplied by the accommodation itself plus photos and comments by guests who have already stayed there. There are also options for making bookings if you decide to make a reservation.
My list of Prague accommodation for this area.
5*. Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa. The five star Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa is currently one of the top 10 hotels here and definitely a "honeymoon" hotel in the heart of Mala Strana. Restaurant decor is a bit overpowering but, the whole place is quite luxurious. 16th Century building. Eight minute walk to the Charles Bridge or Prague Castle. It has one of the best (if not the best) Spa and relaxion centres in the city. Note that alchymisthotelresidence.com is the old domain of the hotel. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.alchymisthotel.com.
5*. Alchymist Suites. A sister hotel of Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa located at Snemovni 8 (quiet road) in a 15th Century mansion. Eight suites lavishly decorated in standard Alchymist colours (red and gold) and with beautiful parquet flooring. Strangest looking gym I ever saw. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.alchymistpraguecastle.com.
Something special: Butler service.
5*. Hotel Aria. The five star Hotel Aria is in the same street as the Alchymist i.e right in the heart of the old Mala Strana. Decoration is very chic and stylish i.e. not the red felt and gold like the Alchymist. The rooms on each floor are decorated in a musical style, Jazz, Classical, Contemporary and Opera. Very nice rooftop restaurant. Hotel garden overlooks the "Vrtbovska" landscaped garden Charles Bridge is a 5 minute walk. It does very popular wedding/honeymoon packages. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.ariahotel.net.
Something special: Rooftop restaurant view.
5*. Hotel Mandarin Oriental. The Hotel Mandarin Oriental opened in 2006 in the lower "diplomat area" of Mala Strana. Quiet location in the space between the official Mala Strana and Kampa. It's a converted Monastery. Eight minute walk to Charles Bridge and very pleasant to walk through the park during the day. Luxurious and elegant interior (says the hotel). Their Essensia Asian/Czech restaurant has nice food but local reviews don't rate the dining experience very highly. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.mandarinoriental.com/prague.
5*. Hotel Hoffmeister. The five star Hotel Hoffmeister is also a Spa Hotel with 38 rooms and is on the far side of the castle making it as close to the Old Town Square as it is to the centre of Mala Strana. It's restaurant "Ada" is consistently in the Prague top 10 restaurants and is always listed in the Michelin red guides. Front facing rooms overlook the main road and hill i.e. noisy if window is open. Rear rooms face the lovely garden. Five minute walk to Malostranska metro/tram stop. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hoffmeister.cz.
Something special: Restaurant Ada.
5* The Augustine. The Augustine is part of the Rocco Forte group. Built into the renovated Augustine monastery. Lots of rooms and suites, no two seem to be decorated in the same way. Everything has views either of the courtyard or the castle. The original monastery tower was turned into an individual suite aptly called "the tower suite" and is possibly in the top 3 most sought after rooms in the city. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.theaugustine.com.
5* Hotel U Jezulatka. Only 6 rooms with view of either Charles Bridge or the Castle. Superior rooms are 23m square and Executive rooms are 35m square. Free mini-bar, breakfast served to the room or in the restaurant. It's a place that believes in attentive service. Rooms in low season from 130 Euros. Packages start at 300 Euros for a two night stay (which I think is a very good price by the way). Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.prague-hotel-ujezulatka.com.
5*. Residence Lundborg. The four star Residence Lundborg is right next to the Charles Bridge. In this case "a stones throw" would actually hit the bridge. Thirteen suites of varying sizes. Parents should note that the living rooms also have a sofa bed. Aircon. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.residencelundborg.cz.
5* Hotel U Tri Capu. Hotel 3 Storks. Located just off Valstejnska Namesti so its reasonably quiet. Opened in 2011. Its in a 14th Century building but the rooms have a modern design and are spacious. Personally I consider this is a hotel at the top of the 4 star class but then I've not seen the service. Its a two minute walk to the centre of Mala Strana and about 10 minutes to the Old Town. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.utricapu.
4* Hotel Prague Castle. As you can imagine, it's close to the Castle but, as it's not at the top of the hill it is here in the Mala Strana section. Actually it's quicker to walk to the Old Town (other side of the Manes Bridge) than it is to get to the Castle entry. Any front facing room has a nice view of the Castle. Only rooms on the upper floors get the river and Charles Bridge view as well. Decor? well it's crap. Pretty good value considering the view and close proximity to the Old Town and free airport transfer (if you book online). Malostranska metro station is across the road. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelpraguecastle.cz.
4* Hotel Waldstein. A 14th Century building buried right in the heart of Mala Strana in a fairly quiet square. Six minute walk to the nearest metro station and also to the Charles Bridge. A walk up the castle steps to the Castle main entry will also take less than 10 minutes. Rooms are individually furnished and you must confirm if you want double or twin. You'll remember breakfast in the basement cavern. Part of the AVE group. No lift. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelwaldstein.cz.
4* Hotel Domus Balthasar. Probably one of the most expensive in it's class. Sister hotel to the Domus Henrici and follows exactly the same ethos i.e. small hotel, less than 10 rooms and excellent personal service. Located in Mostecka which is the road that leads to the Charles Bridge. In 2010 it made the Sunday Times "hot 100" and was the only hotel in Prague on that list. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.domus-balthasar.cz.
4* Residence Dvorak. The rating is based on apartment fittings. Located in the quiet Na Kampe. All one bedroom apartments. All prices based on two people sharing. All front facing rooms overlook the renovated "Mission Impossible where the car gets blown up" square. Hotel opened in 2001 after renovation then the restaurant was renovated again after the 2002 flood. Email them with your approximate requirements and they'll give you their offer. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.rezidence-dvorak.cz.
4* Hotel U Zlatych Nuzek. Also called Hotel at the Golden Scissors. Used to be only a restaurant until the flood of 2002 after which it reopened as a hotel/restaurant. Low end of the 4 star class but high end of the pricing. Great location in Na Kampe at the foot of the Charles Bridge and front facing rooms overlook the renovated "Mission Impossible where the car gets blown up" square. The Golden View room has a rooftop view and if you lean out the window you get the Castle view in the distance. Half-board is possible. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.uzlatychnuzek.com.
4*. Appia Apartments. The four star Appia Residence (part of the H&H group) opened in 2005 in Mala Strana between the castle and Petrin Park. Quiet area but with a couple of restaurants and bars just around the corner. This is Prague accommodation with huge suites and spacious rooms. Very pleasant outside public areas. Ten minute walk to Castle, 15 minutes walk to Charles Bridge. Personally recommended. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.appia-apartments.com.
4*. Hotel Pinot. Formerly Verona House. Small place (14 rooms) and a friendly public area. Rooms are modern but, not spacious. Excellent value and 30 seconds walk from Charles Bridge. Their angle is to attract wine lovers and people looking to take wine tours. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelpinot.cz.
4*. Bishops House. There's the original Mala Strana "Bishops House" and opposite is "Bishops House 2". Mixed feelings about this Prague accommodation. Excellent location a stones throw from Charles Bridge. Rooms are fine but, the four star standard is rising fast and I think without a refit, this will have trouble making it. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.starshotelsprague.com.
4*. Hotel Sax. Hotel Sax upgraded from 3 star to 4 star "design" in 2009. Public areas are airy, ultra-retro, clean and efficient. It has a great atrium. Not a choice for those wanting Baroque decor etc. Nice quiet location 5 minutes walk from both Castle and Charles Bridge. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.sax.cz.
4*. Hotel Archibald. This is the Archibald "at the Charles Bridge" not Archbald City. Excellent location on Na Kampe with front facing rooms facing the square and rear facing the river. Very pleasant bar/restaurant and garden attached and a very popular choice at New Year. Only the "deluxe" rooms are airconditioned. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.archibald.cz.
4*. Hotel Certovka. The four star Hotel Certovka (pronounced Chertovka) is nestled right by the Charles bridge. Sometimes described as being in Mala Strana and sometimes as being in Kampa (Kampa has the exclusive tag). All 21 rooms (16 doubles and 5 singles) and public areas are smart and spacious. Lots of marble. Great if you can get one of the rooms overlooking the Certovka canal or the bridge. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.certovka.cz.
4*. Hotel Constans. The four star Hotel Constans (not constance) is in a quiet area of Mala Strana (Constans and Sax are 20 metres away from each other) and it's less than 10 minutes walk to either the castle or Charles Bridge. It has a total of 31 rooms, (attic rooms have aircon). All rooms are spacious and stylish with parquet flooring. Part of a small hotel group called "New Age". Late check-in and early check-out, 3pm and 11am. One point of a little Prague accommodation triangle in this location. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelconstans.cz.
4*. Hotel Pod Vezi. "Pod Vezi" means "under the tower" and that's right where it is i.e. in the shadow of the Mala Strana Charles Bridge tower. Doesn't get more central than this. This four star hotel has only 12 rooms ranging from 20m single rooms up to 47m suites. Decor is tasteful but, could not be called stylish. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hotelpodvezi.cz.
4*. Hotel U Pava. The four star Hotel U Pava is listed as "romantic" Prague accommodation. Sometimes "romantic" is a keyword for "dated". Reviews are very mixed but lean towards positive. It's a 17th Century building on the high side of Mala Strana (was not flooded in 2002) and one of the older hotels here hence some rooms are described as elegant but not modern. Five minutes walk to the Charles Bridge. Excellent restaurant right next door at Hergetova Cihelna plus three or four respectable and scenic restaurants within two minute walk including "Kampa Fish". Now part of the KK group. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their group homepage is at www.romantichotels.cz.
4*. Residence Bila Kuzelka. The four star Residence Bila Kuzelka is one street over from the Charles Bridge. Breakfast served to the rooms. Public restaurant/bar attached. Tasteful decoration, friendly staff. Does "honeymoon" packages. Ten doubles and 4 suites (rooftop). Recommended (especially for the attic apartments) which have a nice Mala Strana rooftop view. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.bilakuzelka.com.
4*. Residence Nosticova. The four star Residence Nosticova has ten suites. Very quiet location on the low side of Mala Strana 5 minute walk from Charles Bridge (during the day when you can use the park, otherwise at night it's 10 minutes via the roads). Great Honeymoon choice. Does "romantic" packages, 4 for 3 and 3 for 2 etc. Same group that owns the Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa. Note that nosticovaresidence.com is the old hotel domain. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.nosticova.com.
4*. Residence Trinidad. The four star Residence Trinidad (also called Aparthotel Residence Trinidad) is located on the far side of the castle so it makes this Prague accommodation as close to the Old Town Square as it is to central Mala Strana. Malostranska tram/metro stop is a 1 minute walk. Charles Bridge would be approx a 15-20 minute walk. Prices of the rooms are based on if you have a castle view or not and rooms on higher floors have river view if facing the front. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.trinidad.cz.
4*. Charles Hotel. Charles Hotel is a recent addition to the four star Prague accommodation options in Mala Strana. Only a 2 minute walk to the Charles Bridge. Thirty rooms of various sizes depending on the partition. It has the problem of many hotels here in that rooms appear very high but, not so wide (caused by partitioning). Located on a street corner but not much traffic in the area. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.thecharleshotelprague.com.
4*. Lokal Inn. Located in a quiet side street in an old building just 30 seconds from the Charles Bridge. Although there are very nice rooms in the hotel I do not consider the whole place rates four stars. The restaurant certainly does not and neither do the attic rooms. I recommend the "attic" rooms only for people who want extra space. You are paying for the location. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.lokalinn.cz.
3*. Pension Pohadka. Little place right behind the Malostranska metro station in Valdstejnska. President apartment is recommended as it has the most space in bedroom and living room. Senator and Diplomat are OK so long as you don't mind a really cramped bedroom. Governor is recommended as a straight double room i.e. no living area. Really good value. Aircon in all areas. 10% off if staying 5 days or more. Ambassador and Governor do not include breakfast but its only an extra 100Kc/person. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.pensionpohadka.cz.
3*. Hotel Kampa Garden. This is best described as "value for money". Great parkside location but don't expect luxury in the rooms. Two minutes walk to Charles Bridge and many nice restaurants right outside the hotel in Na Kampe. It has two family rooms where an extra bed can be accommodated. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.kampagarden.cz.
3*. U Zlute Boty (at the Yellow Shoe). This has now closed.
3*. Pension Dientzenhofer. This is a stones throw from the Park at Kampa (separated from the park by a small stream). Very quiet street (this place and Nosticova Residence are here). Only nine rooms and lots of history to go with them. Friendly staff. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.dientzenhofer.cz.
3* Hotel U Schnellu. All street facing rooms have a view of Malostranske Namesti and the St Nicholas Church dome. The price of this is that you are facing noisy streets with a tramline corner that will wake the dead. Apart from that it's great value at any time of the year. Guests get 20% off at the restaurant as well. Five minute walk to either Charles Bridge or the Wallenstein Gardens and 10 minutes walk to the Castle. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.uschnellu.cz.
3* Dum U Velke Boty. Also known as House at the Big Boot. I like to call it House with the big price. Buried in the old Mala Strana I can't fault it's location or quaintness. Rooms are all different hence the eclectic style. Prices do NOT include 9% tax and unbelieveably breakfast is not included either. Oh and it's CASH ONLY i.e. no cards or cheques. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.dumuvelkeboty.cz (except you'll find no deals here.........).
3* Residence Prague or Residence U Cerneho Orla. Also known as the Black Eagle. Located in Mostecka which is the road that leads to the Charles Bridge. Front rooms overlook the street which is busy with pedestrians i.e. not so much traffic. Rear facing rooms overlook the courtyard. Check if your room is double or twin (Imperial room is a true double). All rooms are stylishly decorated. Selection from a breakfast menu i.e. not buffet and you can have your choice served to the room from 10-11am. Automatic 15% online discount. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.residenceprague.cz.
Something special: breakfast served to the room.
3* Charles Bridge B&B. I've put this in as a 3 star only because of the fittings standard. It does not have a 24 hour reception. All rooms have tea/coffee facilities and a fridge but only the apartments have a full kitchen. Double rooms are good value for the location i.e. a stone thrown will hit the Charles Bridge from the front door. Apartments represent outstanding value if shared between couples or a small group. As usual confirm that the room you want has a double or twin beds. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.charlesbridgebb.com.
3* Charles Bridge Residence. Same as above in the location and star rating based on room standard alone. Check for availability whether you want street facing or rear facing. Room 6 is largest and street facing. Room 7 has a large floor area but, is under the roof (less headroom but nice decor). Good value if you can book and pay in advance otherwise you'll have to hope they discount. Free airport transfer in high season. Free nights in low season. Prague hotels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.charlesbridgeresidence.com.
2* Little Town Hotel. It's a hostel. Great location facing the entry of St Nicholas church in Malostranske Namesti. Different options for rooms depending on number of beds and whether you are willing to share a bathroom etc. Prices are per person as is usual for a hostel. Breakfast is extra. Company runs 4 hostels in the city. Prague hostels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.littletownhotel.cz.
2* Hostel Sokol. Located on Kampa almost next door to the Dientzenhofer. Cheap prices considering the location on this side. Dorm beds from 16 Euros. Double room with shared bath from 28 Euros. No breakfast. Guarded parking. Swimming Pool (public at weekends). 15 minute walk up to the castle and 20 minutes to the Old Town Square. Avoid Kampa Park at night if possible. Prague hostels may offer local Prague deals so their homepage is at www.hostelsokol.cz.
