Area Introduction

Mala Strana is literally translated as Lesser Side. It has been historically recorded that this area of Prague was settled in the 5th Century and that the current city name known in Czech as "Praha" can be traced to this time when it was known by it's old Slavic name of "Prah" meaning threshold. This is the area squeezed between the castle and the river. Generally, Mala Strana occupies the flat area at the base of the castle extending about 400 metres along the main road. To one side the border is the Malostranska metro station. On the other side the border is the "Hunger Wall" that separates Mala Strana and Ujezd. All riverfront property in this stretch is also Mala Strana but, can also be called Kampa if it is located on the Kampa Island. This area has many nice bars and restaurants and is considered less rowdy than the other side of the river. There are no hostels in this area and most cultural activities are up at the castle.

5*. The five star Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa is currently one of the top 10 hotels here and definitely a "honeymoon" hotel in the heart of Mala Strana. Restaurant decor is a bit overpowering but, the whole place is quite luxurious. 16th Century building. Eight minute walk to the Charles Bridge or Prague Castle. It has one of the best (if not, the best) Spa and relaxion centres in the city. Note that alchymisthotelresidence.com is the old domain of the hotel. As a guide, you will find the current hotel homepage at www.alchymisthotel.com.

5*. The five star Hotel Aria is in the same street as the Alchymist i.e right in the heart of the old Mala Strana. Décor is very chic and stylish i.e. not the red felt and gold like the Alchymist. The rooms on each floor are decorated in a musical style, Jazz, Classical, Contemporary and Opera. Very nice rooftop restaurant. Hotel garden overlooks the "Vrtbovska" landscaped garden Charles Bridge is a 5 minute walk. It does very popular wedding/honeymoon packages. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.ariahotel.net.

5*. The five star Hotel Mandarin Oriental opened in 2006 in the lower "diplomat area" of Mala Strana. Quiet location in the space between the official Mala Strana and Kampa. It's a converted Monastery. Eight minute walk to Charles Bridge and very pleasant to walk through the park during the day. Luxurious and elegant interior (says the hotel). "Asian" restaurant has nice food but local reviews don't rate the dining experience very highly. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.mandarinoriental.com/prague.

5*. The five star Hotel Hoffmeister is also a Spa Hotel with 38 rooms and is on the far side of the castle making it as close to the Old Town Square as it is to the centre of Mala Strana. It's restaurant "Ada" is consistently in the Prague top 10 restaurants. Front facing rooms overlook the main road and hill i.e. noisy if window is open. Rear rooms face the garden. Five minute walk to Malostranska metro/tram stop. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hoffmeister.cz.

4*. The four star Appia Residence opened in 2005 in Mala Strana between the castle and Petrin Park. Quiet area but with a couple of restaurants and bars just around the corner. Huge suites and spacious rooms. Very pleasant outside public areas. Ten minute walk to Castle, 15 minutes walk to Charles Bridge. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.appia-apartments.com.

4*. The four star Hotel Verona opened in 2005. Small place (14 rooms) and a friendly public area. Rooms are modern but, not spacious. Excellent value and 1 minute walk from Charles Bridge. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.starshotelsprague.com.

4*. There's the original Mala Strana "Bishops House"and opposite is "Bishops House 2". Mixed feelings about this place, excellent location a stones throw from Charles Bridge. Rooms are fine but, the four star standard is rising fast and I think this will have trouble making it. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.starshotelsprague.com.

4*. The four star Hotel Certovka (pronounced Chertovka) is nestled right by the Charles bridge. Sometimes described as being in Mala Strana and sometimes as being in Kampa (Kampa has the exclusive tag). All 21 rooms (16 doubles and 5 singles) and public areas are smart and spacious. Lots of marble. Great if you can get one of the rooms overlooking the Certovka canal or the bridge. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.certovka.cz.

4*. The four star Hotel Constans (not constance) is in a quiet area of Mala Strana (Constans, Zlute Boty and Sax are all 20 metres away from each other) and it's less than 10 minutes walk to either the castle or Charles Bridge. It has a total of 31 rooms, (attic rooms have aircon). All rooms are spacious and stylish with parquet flooring. Late check-in and early check-out, 3pm and 11am. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelconstans.cz.

4*. "Pod Vezi" means "under the tower" and that's right where it is i.e. in the shadow of the Mala Strana Charles Bridge tower. Doesn't get more central than this. This four star hotel has only 12 rooms ranging from 20m single rooms up to 47m suites. Decor is tasteful but, could not be called stylish. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.hotelpodvezi.cz.

4*. The four star Hotel U Pava is often called a "romantic" hotel. Sometimes "romantic" is a keyword for "dated". Reviews are very mixed but lean towards positive. It's a 17th Century building on the high side of Mala Strana (was not flooded in 2002) and one of the older hotels here hence some rooms are described as elegant but not modern. Five minutes walk to the Charles Bridge. Excellent restaurant right next door at Hergetova Cihelna plus three or four respectable and scenic restaurants within two minute walk including the new "Kampa Fish". Now part of the KK group. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.romantichotels.cz.

4*. The four star Residence Bila Kuzelka is one street over from the Charles Bridge. Breakfast served to the rooms. Public restaurant/bar attached. Tasteful decoration, friendly staff. Does "honeymoon" packages. Ten doubles and 4 suites (rooftop). Recommended (especially for the attic apartments) which have a nice Mala Strana rooftop view. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.bilakuzelka.com.

4*. The four star Residence Lundborg is right next to the Charles Bridge. In this case "a stones throw" would actually hit the bridge. Thirteen suites of varying sizes. Parents should note that the living rooms also have a sofa bed. Aircon. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.residencelundborg.cz.

4*. The four star Residence Nosticova has ten suites. Very quiet location on the low side of Mala Strana 5 minute walk from Charles Bridge (during the day when you can use the park, otherwise at night it's 10 minutes via the roads). Great Honeymoon choice. Does "romantic" packages. Same group that owns the Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa. Note that nosticovaresidence.com is the old hotel domain. As a guide, you will find the current hotel homepage at www.nosticova.com.

4*. The four star Residence Trinidad is located on the far side of the castle and is as close to the Old Town Square as it is to central Mala Strana. Malostranska tram/metro stop is a 1 minute walk. Charles Bridge would be approx a 15-20 minute walk. Prices of the rooms are based on if you have a castle view or not. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.trinidad.cz.

4*. Charles Hotel is a recent addition to the four star hotel options in Mala Strana. Excellent location in a quiet street but, only a 3 minute walk to the Charles Bridge. Thirty rooms of various sizes depending on the partition. It has the problem of many hotels here in that rooms appear very high but, not so wide (caused by partitioning).

3*. Hotel Kampa Garden is best described as "value for money". Great park side location but don't expect luxury in the rooms. Two minutes walk to Charles Bridge and many nice restaurants right outside the hotel in Na Kampe.

3*. Hotel Sax is a modern 3 star. Public areas are airy, clean and efficient. It has a great atrium. Not a choice for those wanting Baroque decor etc. Nice quiet location 5 minutes walk from both Castle and Charles Bridge. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.sax.cz.

3*. U Zlute Boty (at the Yellow Shoe) is buried in original Mala Strana. Lists itself as three and a half. It only has 7 rooms which are all spacious and wood beamed but with modern facilities. Perfect "Honeymoon" hotel. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the hotel homepage at www.zlutabota.cz.

3*. Pension Dientzenhofer is a stones throw from the Park at Kampa (separated from the park by a small stream). Very quiet street (this place and Nosticova residence are here). Only nine rooms and lots of history to go with them. Friendly staff. Personally recommended. As a guide, you will find the pension homepage at www.dientzenhofer.cz.
