Prague Castle Hotels – The Top of the Hill

The area around the Prague Castle is the quietest of all the central areas but it’s also the highest so all the places below will require a hill walk, public transport or taxis. Some places have amazing views over the city. Due to the large numbers of palaces and government buildings in the area the choice of Prague Castle hotels is quite small so below you’ll find my favourites in the area. Most of the restaurants and bars in the area can be found at Hradcanska Namesti (in front of the main castle entry, Loretanska (the road leading up to the Cernin Palace) and Pohorelec (the square at the top of the hill).

5 Star Prague Castle Hotels – Hotel Lindner

prague castle hotels, hotel lindner garden view

This was formerly called the Crowne Plaza Prague Castle. The rooms are large and nicely decorated. Excellent service with free sauna/fitness but massages are charged extra. The rooms are all the same size. Business class gets a free bottle of water. First Class guarantees a view on the courtyard side of the hotel and a wood beamed ceiling. Wifi is free in the public areas but fast access is charged in the rooms. The hotel is located in the Strahov complex so it’s all pedestrianised however, you will have a 30 minute walk to the Old Town Square from here. Nice to take your breakfast out on the courtyard terrace. You access it by the little road adjacent to the old fortress wall.

5 Star – Hotel Savoy

This is one of the original five star luxury hotels here and right on the edge of the Prague Castle hotels area. It was a great location for politicians to stay with it’s close proximity to Prague Castle and Foreign Ministry. Now with all the other new 4* and 5* options in the Old Town it’s a bit further down the list. All 61 rooms are sumptuous in their decor and facilities and are all air conditioned. Rear facing upper rooms have views over the city and the suite with terrace at the top has panoramic views of the city and park.

4 Star – Monastery

courtyard view of the hotel monastery in prague

Now also known as Residence Monastery, it’s located in the Strahov Monastery complex. It has only 12 rooms and they’ve been refurbished in a modern style which was a missed opportunity for a 14th Century building. It has very friendly staff and is recommended for those wanting room space. Reserve rooms on the second floor as the third floor is under the roof and has no windows. Never fails to amaze me when you walk through the old Monastery gate next to the hotel and see the city view. Very pleasant garden with associated small orchard. NOTE: this is NOT the Hotel Monastery Garden which is in the Old Town.

4 Star – U Krale Karla

No views from inside the hotel unless you take an attic room but what a great place to stay. An historic building (as many are in this street) built over 500 years ago. It contains 19 beautiful rooms with sturdy furniture and original 17th Century features. There’s even a real fire in the lobby and the rear of the hotel extends out over the steps. Nice touch with the restored stained glass windows at the front but it means you cannot see outside. Attic rooms have Petrin Park and city views. A gem in this small list of recommended Prague Castle hotels.

4 Star – Red Lion

external view of the red lion prague hotel

Located towards the top of Nerudova and opposite the Hotel Neruda. It has been recommended for as long as I’ve lived here. You’ll know you’re at the right place as there’s a big red lion above the door. 21 gorgeous rooms of varying sizes due to being arranged as structure allows in this 16th Century building. The views are “Garden” meaning the Petrin Park and “Landmark” meaning the street and Prague Castle. The building contains many original Renaissance features popular in this class of Prague Castle hotels. Quite large rooms (one of the top floor rooms has an attached attic room which sleeps another two people). Friendly staff and was considered one of the Prague luxury hotels of it’s time but, now slipped a bit. Still personally recommended though.

3 Star – Hotel Loreta

Located next to the Prague Loreta opposite the Foreign Ministry building it has 10 rooms (9 are doubles) and two of the doubles are big enough for an extra bed. It’s a three star (and the only one of the Prague Castle hotels in this class that I recommend) but could easily upgrade by increasing the room spec and services so I expect it won’t be a 3 star for long. Nice rear summer garden. Nothing particularly in the area after dark except two or three restaurants so expect to be walking a lot or be prepared to take the tram to cut out the hill walk. Hotel decor is elegant and smart.

MY TIP: If you are staying at the top of the hill (Savoy, Lindner, Monastery, Loreta) then try the hill once and if it’s a struggle, buy a travel pass and take the number 22 or 23 tram from Malostranske Namesti. 8 minute trip and get off at the Pohorelec stop. If you are aged 65 or over and carry your passport then public transport is free.
